Ask the person that sent you the file to open it in Works, and save it as an ".rtf" file, then anyone can open it with NotePad, WordPad or MS-Word or even Open Office. Microsoft doesn't even support ".wps" files on MS-Office! You and your friend should get the FREE, and MS-Office compatible, Open Office, from: Then, your friend should stop using MS-Works, it's basically ONLY a learning tool for people new to Windows.

How about trying to convert it? There is a free online converter:
www.media-converter.com
To make life easier, I would download the Works file to the desktop.
Then, go to Media-converter.
It is easy to use. Click the down arrow to select the Works file on the desktop and convert it to Word.

This is Microsft at its best. You cannot open a Works file with any MS office suite programs.

you cant open it without works. works is like a downgraded version of word that came out first. its really old, and your friend really ought to just use wordpad instead if they want anyone to be able to read their files.
