Okay, I am not an organized diet or health expert, but over the last year I went from a size 16 to a size 6 by changing just a few habits:
1) I drink at least two liters of water everyday. I am not a fan of regular water, so I also drink sparkling water which is more fun! I will put a slice of lemon or lime in it which makes it more pleasing to the taste buds too.
2) I cut milk out of my diet after breakfast - meaning, no milk after breakfast.
3) I stopped drinking regular pop and switched to diet, but even so, I try to limit myself to one diet pop a day because it still isn't good for me.

Honestly, eat about six times a day. Eat fruits, veggies, baked and grilled foods. Fat free milk is awesome. Cut down on sugar intake. Then of course as much as we hate it, excersise. But I like pilates and Teabo and walking. Belive it or not I lost 45lbs. just walking in a matter of about 6 weeks. Good luck.

Move to Argentina.
Seriously, after six months in Buenos Aires, I lost 40 lbs.
The beef was the best thing to eat, and the fresh salads were outstanding.
The dressings tasted weird, though, so I usually just did without them.
And the pastries were ugly and awful-tasting.
So, I ate steak and salad twice a day for six months; the pounds just fell off.

You need to eat healthier, like adding more fruits and veggies and grains, cut out unnecessary sweets, get excercise, but one of the easiest ways is to have smaller portions at mealtimes.
