I have about a week in Italy. I plan on 3-4 days in Rome, but can't decide where to go after. Should I head down to Naples and the coast, or go north to other cities? I can't decide for the life of me, and want to hear opinions from others. I have never been to Italy before...

Naples, definatley! I was there for 3 days and had the time of my life! The city is so lively. Also you can take a ferry to Capri, which is absoutely beautiful! Italy was the first country I had visited in Europe and by far it is my favorite. You will fall in love with the country.
PS. If you go to the coast, be sure to drink some Lemoncello :)

There's more to Italy than Rome. Take the train to Florence for a one or two day trip. From there go to Sienna and gawk.

there are quite some less expensive hostels in Italy. maximum of them have a tendency to be contained in the cities and larger cities. Spring is a sturdy time to holiday Italy, in basic terms keep clean of Easter even as issues are both closed, crowded or in basic terms straightforward intense priced. there is an staggering railway device on both coasts, inland will be somewhat hit and omit. the most inexpensive lodging is clearly camp internet sites, yet except to have or can borrow light-weight equipment the funding would not be sensible for some weeks. even with takes position...........delight in

as Italian I can suggest you (this is my preference order):
Venice, Turin and Florence.
Of course it depends on how many days you can stay adn if you prefer art cities or sea and natural places.
I really counsil to not miss Turin, after the Olympics winter Games the city is with a new grat look and furthermore it's here where Italy has born as a nation.
Have a good trip!!

definitely see more than just Rome!

Napoli is nice, and there are spectacular ruins worth seeing nearby (Pompeii, Herculaneum).

I personally love Tuscany (not just Florence - get out into the countryside! Greve-in-Chianti or Volterra!)

Firenze (Florence) - from there, it's an easy day trip to Pisa (Leaning Tower).
