Sit down by a lake, a creek, beach, by yourself and ask yourself where your life will end up if you continue. This triggers thinking to motivate you to stop.
Next up, realize that you're going to be addicted to something else, so before you fall into another addiction, choose what you're going to dedicate that addictive energy towards. It can be taking care of yourself, helping others, volunteering etc.
Or actually try doing all. After doing the above, I haven't had any addictions. It's something that I need to be aware of everyday so that I know not to mess with something that is naturally addictive.
good luck! and take care!

I'm no expert, but it seems that people go into rehab to isolate themselves from what they are addicted to.
Then, they deal with the underlying issues that made them become addicted to the substance/thing/person in the first place.
It is like quitting cold turkey and then getting support for staying out of addiction in the future.

To change an old habit or begin a new habit it takes 21 days. After being in addiction for years, it took hitting my rock bottom, "living to use and using to live." I had to enter an inpatient rehab center and chose to stay for 4 months. It was life changing. I have now been sober/clean for 15 months and I am in college ending my second semester. I choose to go to Narcotic Anonymous although my addiction is alcohol. Both NA and AA (alcohol anonymous) are great 12-step programs.
I believe you must change your thinking, your lifestyle and your friends.

Addictions come in many forms. There is no real answer to this question. If you were talking about a specific addiction then certain things could be said of it.

Looking at what drives the addiction.
People often use substances to combat boredom, depression and other difficult emotional states. Finding help with the underlying issue that prompts a person to use is a more rounded approach.
