There may be a temple or Buddhist Church in your town - they will certainly have a bulletin board or website. You could try craigslist - frequently meditation centers put on classes and advertise in craigslist. Then there's Tricycle magazine, published quarterly, it will have ads for retreats. I think a teacher is important but it's not like you can exactly predict which teacher will work best for you.

Personally, I like books - one of my favorites was "Awakening The Buddhist Heart" by Lama Surya Das. Oh, and if books don't work maybe you could search for podcasts - there's this Zen guy name Gil Fronsdal who's got a pretty good series and on a not exactly Buddhist-specific note there's Alan Watts. (google them and they will come to you).

Good luck.

Somewhere in your community there is likely a Buddhist group or two or three. Check the phone book or online and try to find that group. Attend a meeting. They'll hook you up!

I'd say start by reading "A Simple Path" by the Dalai Lama... then (depending on where you live) find a mentor.
