Am I good? Or just average?

Question

Okay, I have a question.

I've been taking piano lessons for 9 years and I can write and play a lot of songs. (for example I can play every Evanescence song) People tell me I'm really, really good, and amazing, and that I'm going to be famous and get a record deal someday, but I don't think so. I think I'm pretty average and that a ton of people are better than me. The only thing that's different about me than anyone else I know, is that I play with a lot of passion and I put my whole soul into the music I'm playing/writing. What do you guys think? Am I good? Or just average?

Be careful of listening to family and friends, they always lie...we've seen it, those on american Idol who really think they can sing but sound like they're completely tone deaf.

My mother's just as bad. She takes, what me and my sister refer to as, "trust me" pictures lol She thinks they're absolutely beautiful but we know better.

Who are you playing for anyway? If you put your soul into it, then it sounds like you love what you do, so who cares what other people think?

Everyone's opinion's are different and no matter how good you are, there will always be someone out there better than you, so stop comparing yourself with others and just enjoy it.

In popular music being good or even amazing doesn't mean much. There are famous people who can barely play or sing and there are incredible musicians/singers who barely make a living.

The main thing is, do you enjoy playing? It seems you do, so just play. Find yourself gigs be they small bars or street corners, who cares? You're doing what you want and that's what matters. Watch the movie "American Harcore". It's interesting whether you like punk or not. Those guys did it their own way and some of them got pretty well known, even if not rich. Also remember Nirvana cut their first album for $500.

And today, with computers and the Internet, it's amazing what you can do.

Just go and do it. And enjoy yourself.

Well babygirl, I have heard you play. And you are absolutely amazing. I don't care what you think about yourself, I know that you're talented and passionate and an amazing pianist. If this is what you want to dedicate your life to then I know you can do it.

None of us that could answer this question are able to give you the answer you're looking for without hearing you, but I don't think you should rely on others to validate your talent. Why do the opinions of strangers matter if you love what you're doing? Love your talent on its own, without needing it compared to the talents of others or complemented by people you don't know in order to feel talented. Don't let your self-worth be reliant on others, and don't compare your talents to those of others. A very wise friend of mine once told me that everyone has their individual talents that stand apart from everyone else's, and this is very true.

honey stop putting yourself down to compare yourself to others,or doubting yourself, enjoy what your gift is and continue to do it passionately/ do convince yourself you are great by telling yourself you are talented otherwise your negative part of your mind will interfer and you will not achieve what you're capable
