Are you certain your system meets all the requirements? I've heard Vista is very fussy about Video Cards and Processors when you're installing. Double check your system spec against what Microsoft say you should have and see if that indicates the issue.
If you've paid for Vista, then you'll have support from Microsoft that you could take advantage of. If it's a downloaded copy from torrent or similar, you may have a dodgy version. Either re-download or buy an official copy.

From everything I'm hearing about Vista that may be a very good thing for you. I would uninstall Vista, do a system restore to a point before you started messing with Vista, defrag, and reboot. Then enjoy your new upgrades without all the fluff and heartache of Vista.

How old is the computer? There might not be drivers that support Vista on your system. Anyways, Vista is a total p.o.s. and you should stay with XP
