I am currently a junior in high school, and now am looking toward career paths that I might be interested. The idea of being a doctor has stuck with me all my life. I understand that my goals may change, but I figure, I might as well start preparing now to see if I am still interested when it comes time to take the MCATs. My question is, what are some things I can do to prepare for a career in medicine and make sure it is really something I love?

All you need is a strong will and there is nothing you cant accomplish, dont let anyone tell you that you cant do something. Becoming a surrgeon is one of the hardest and most stressful things a person can do but it will all pay off in the long run. Make sure you take as many chemistry, biology, and english classes you can in high school to best prepare you for college. Also make sure you take calculus and physics courses. Another huge suggestion that I have for you is that start studying for your MCAT as soon as possible if you have your heart set on becoming a doctor because I can guarantee you that it will be the hardest test you will take. i know as a junior in high school you dont exactly want to go out and purchase MCAT study material and do anymore studying than you have to, but it will be the best thing you ever do. And one other thing to remember is the MCAT is one of the first things medical schools look at in their choice to accept students and i know the medical school i went to a requirement to become a surgeon was no lower than a 31 on the MCAT. So start early, treat studying for the MCAT almost like a class take an hour out of your day just to look over some material and you will ace the MCAT with no problem. Good luck and god bless!

A (relatively) short answer: You need 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of med school and anywhere from 4 years (to be an anesthesiologist) to 6 or more (to be a surgeon) years of residency. You don't need to major in science in college (and most med schools want non-science majors) but you need to take a certain amount of science classes so you can take the mCAT. The mCAT is taken in the junior year of college and is needed to get into med school. You apply/interview to med school in your junior/senior years of college. In addition to mCAT's, having medical research experience and practical experience (following docs around in their office or in the Operating Room) will bolster your application. Call your local hospital and tell them you want to shadow a surgeon or anesthesiologist...they can hook you up with someone. Do it sooner rather than later and find out how bad you really want to be a doctor. It's a pretty tough road. Med school is real intense, and then residency is even more so. It's worth it but you have to love it. Good luck.

Strong will and determination are the most important factors you need to possess to achieve such goal to be a doctor. Studying are the also an integral part but finding out what you have to go through could possibly change your mind if you are not strongly looking directly on such path with strong determination. Well to be sure if it is really something you love, learn more about such profession, and find out different experiences of professionals on such field. Then take both the positives and negatives, and refllect within yourself.

The MCAT tests for physical sciences, biological sciences, and verbal reasoning. Make sure that you take every AP science course that you can. (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) When you go to college, I would recommend majoring in biology, biochemistry, or chemistry. Choose what you are most interested in. Good luck.

the question is, what kind of doctor?
take the time to talk to a doctor of the division you are interested in, and if possible, take a volunteer job. Both my parents are doctors and they always say practice and determination will help you to succeed.
