I am curious as to how to place my silverware after I have finished eating. I have heard a number of answers, but they all seem to contradict. From what I have gathered, the knife and fork should be laid parallel to each other with the serated edge pointing inwards and the fork closest to me, but this is all I can assume. The laying, I've heard, can be horizontally, vertically, or angled. Which is the proper method, or are they all acceptable?

You got it right on the first part. you didnt mention it, the placing is on the plate, not the table when finished

I've heard various takes on this myself. I personally have always done what you described (fork and knife parallel on the plate), and have never gotten strange looks or anything, even at fancy resturants. It's makes the most sense to me since it shows that you're finished, and makes it the easiest for the wait person to pick up the plate without the fork or knife falling off.

You've already got it. Parallel on the plate, the angle of incidence doesn't matter at all.

on the plate, parallel to each other, horizontally. that indicates you're full. at least that's what i learned in europe.

Everybody's right so far, but when you put the fork(s) on your plate, put them tines down.
