The pet food recall had sparked concerns over whether or not any of the contaminated wheat gluten had made it into human food. The Chinese wheat gluten imported by ChemNutra Inc. went to companies that make pet foods only.
The Food and Drug Administration reportedly suspects the contaminated imported Chinese wheat gluten that has caused several pet food recalls may have been intentionally spiked with the harmful industrial chemical melamine.

There is a thing called wheat gluton in it, which is a necessity for the food to give it substance, it was made in China. All the big companies use the same wheat gluton from the same place so that is why not only iams, but also others are having a problem

Latest guess is the food they fed to the pigs at a certain place in California which is an ingredient in cat and dog food. I don't think it was intentional, just one of those ways of saving a little money to stay in business. I have five cats, and cats being smaller, and the food stays in their system longer, well, they are more at risk. It just is, no reason really. Chow.

Chinese used contaminated wheat glutin in pet foods.
Some unscrupulous Chinese suppliers added Melamine to the foods. This product falsifies/increases the amount of protein contained in wheat glutin, which increased profits on the glutin.
Melamine is not a food product. It is used in the manufacturer of plastics.

Melamine is high in nitrogen and that is the way they test for protein. Melamine gives those ingredients an artificially high protein reading. I believe it, too. I checked a the website of the Chinese company that makes rice protein concentrate and they reported it had a minimum protein level of 85%. I checked a US company that makes rice protein concentrate and they reported their product had a maximum protein level of 80%. Looks pretty suspicious to me.

Disgruntled worker on the assembly line. Some people think the real target was possibly human food, but that's just a theory.

Considering that China has been doing mass killing of dogs in recent years in their own country over fear of disease, eg rabies , chicken flu. beleiving the cause is dogs,
Example of one of their culls in their country as reported by the BBC.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/5244304.stm
It is not really too far fetched an idea to suspect it was intentional as way of trying to further their efforts of exterminating dogs
