Yes, I believe this very strongly, and I use the term "ancestor spirits" to describe relatives and loved ones who watch over us from the Other Side. I have often felt the comforting presence of my Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. They have also appeared to me in dreams.
Ancestor Worship is a way of honoring, communicating with, and maintaining a connection to, your deceased loved-ones. You can set up a small altar to them with photographs and personal items. You can leave offerings of flowers, food, or libations of their favorite drink on their graves. You can talk to them quietly, as you would in prayer. There is nothing wrong with this practice (though some will try to tell you it's wrong) It is practiced the world over, in just about every culture. Ancestor Worship is central to Native American culture, for example.
I would say, research it. You might want to also check out Spiritualism, which is very similar to Protestant Christianity, but they believe that your dead relatives can communicate with you through mediums.
Keep your heart and mind open, your mother will be there to comfort you.

I think our imagination gives us want we desperately want to feel. There is no evidence that personality persists in any way after death. But you certainly carry your mother's genetics, memory, character, mannerisms, values etc in your memory in far greater detail than you consciously know, along with feelings she was never able to directly experience, i.e. how she was important and meaningful to you. These are some of the building blocks of which we forge our own essential identity in ways our own children will also find indelible and eerily comforting when we've passed on to make room for their generation.

Only if you want to be comforted by them. It appears to me that once your loved ones cross they only come around if you request them to be there. I'm sure they watch from a distance from time to time and will come in through dreams if there is any real danger to be dealt with.

I truly believe that the heart warming feeling of a mother never leaves you, even when they have passed on, it is a that embrace that makes us feel loved, and love is forever, never fleeing.

That's because she is not a ghost. she is considered a spirit who has crossed over to Heaven and can visit you, comfort you, love you at all times. You may smell something like her perfume or her cooking, and it can mean she is there hugging you or sitting with you during your time of need. She is not a ghost.

sometimes that does happen.
it happens *FAR FAR* more than most people know or admit.
if *everyone* who had such an experience, or something comparable, admitted it... alot more people would tend to belive that it was real, because they would be less prone to thinking they were just nuts or something.
stuff like that definitely does occur though.

Very sorry to hear of your loss.
I lost my dad to cancer and empathize with your loss.
Jesus Christ has the power to take away your pain and grief (when you depend on him).
Personally, I dont believe that our loved ones come back to comfort us. However, there are spirit beings (both good and bad) who can interact with us for good or evil.
Cordially,
John

Your mother is dead in the grave just like the rest of humanity that's ever lived and died, that's all. She is not in heaven. Jesus Christ was the only mortal human being to ascend into heaven...... "No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man (Jesus Christ) who is in heaven"...(John 3:13)......To find out why this is, please continue to read...What Happens After Death?...You will be surprised when the truth hits you square in the face...... http://www.ucg.org/booklets/AD/beingsinheaven.htm

If this were the case then everybody in the world would see their loved ones and have visits too, grief and loneliness can make you think like this.
