When people tile a floor it says you are suppose to start with the full piece right in the center of the room. Which doesn’t make since? Why not use the most visible wall start from there and go over so the wall has a full piece and that way you don't have to cut on both walls only one. If you start from the center you usually have to cut tile for both sides. I don't say because of none straight walls, this is assuming the wall you start with is straight

Always start in the center and work out this way you don't end up with one side different from the other. It keeps the appearance of the room balanced out. Just measure and find the center of your room snap a chalk line and work out. Trust me it will look much better this way

I do not start "laying" the tile from the center, but I do get the measurement to the center and then figure out the distance to both walls. May be one tile centered on the room or the edge of two tiles at the center. You always want the edges to be the same width. It is a matter of "looking" good.

I agree with you and when I just tiled a room I went against popular advice. The reason I did this was that it is an odd shaped room and if I would have started in the middle, I would have had to try to cut really skinny pieces of tile to fill in on both sides. This tile was thicker than most and a bear to cut.

You can do it that way-its a personal choice. I would use a chalk line to line up the initial work both ways and make sure it will work out throughout the room. The center idea is as you assumed, to keep the cutting to the outside of the room. Also the idea to put down all the full sized tiles before you go back to make cuts....

i tiled my kitchen and i started from the wall not the center. And the center of the floor is not" all messed up" like everybody says here, the tiles are nice and straight with designs on them too. go with what you want to do and what would be easier for you.

If you start on the sides, you will end up with cut up pieces of tile in the middle to get it to fit. and fill in. I would rather fill in at the sides where it not as noticable. It make for a cleaner job. Same as installing wallpaper. Go to a tile dealer and ask them where to start. Of G-d forbid get a Do It yourself book and read. Don't be lazy do it right, other wise you are wasting your time and money. Hoyakins

because if you start in the edges then when you finally get to the middle the tiles will look a mess instead of having a nice pattern to them and its easier to cut tiles to fit the edges instead of trying to fit the middle
