optical zoom range. These are the ones i have in mind, Olympus Ultra zoom 7.1 mega sp55ouz, or canon powershot S3IS. the olmpus has a 18x zoom and the canon has a 12x zoom, but i have heard people say that sometimes a large zoom doesnt mean you will get a clear picture. i really love to take macro pictures also. The boys at the camera shop say canon has a better lens even in a point and shoot, so maybe less zoom in that instance is actually better. Thanks for the opinions, i did check dpreview but because i am a novice, i would prefer some expert advice.

The Canon Powershot S3 IS would be the one to get. It is an excellent camera, I have one and love it. A few tips ... when you get it, move it off of auto onto "P" (program) mode, and set the ISO at 100 or 200. Leaving it on auto, you can't tweak any settings, and the photo's are less than satisfactory. Also, you want to manually set the ISO, as leaving it up to the camera may also result in less than satisfactory photo's. Learn to use the many program settings, or tweak the settings on program mode, and you will be delighted with this camera!!

I looked up reviews on the Olympus a few weeks ago, and the overall results are disappointing. Best to pass this one by for now. The 12x optical zoom on the cannon is very good, and I have been very pleased with the results.

Edit: Get two sets of rechargeable batteries, and at least one 1 gigabyte SD card, preferably Ultra II or Extreme III or the equivalent. You will need this kind of fast card for taking videos, and for continuous shot feature.

If you would like some examples of what it can do on zoom, msg me and I will send you some photo's or put them on my flickr acct.
