I had a temporary crown put on a few years back, a metal one, and now it just randomly started aching. only when i press down on it does it hurt. if i go to the dentist, will they be able to take it off then put it back on after they clean it out?

You may need a root canal. It sounds like a nerve problem. See your dentist ASAP.

You need to see a dentist asap. A temporary crown is not supposed to be on for "a few years" and is not sealed like a permanent crown is. You probably have an infection started under it. If you do not have a root canal, the root may be dying.

They might. Something is going on under that crown that needs attention- quickly.
