He is almost a year old. July will make a year. He is a pitbull mixed with a lab. He is very good about going outside but he squats like a girl. He has not been neutered yet.

Your dog will learn to lift his leg when he is "initiated" by another male dog. No kidding! My dog learned the "right" way to pee when he was with an experienced, older dog. It happened overnight.

The good thing about the squatting dog, however, is that once he learns to pee with his leg up, he can also learn to pee on your furniture. Yuck! Maybe you can enjoy the time you have until he learns this little secret....enjoy your baby!

Neutering makes no difference as to whether a male dog lifts his leg or not. Lifting is a method of marking territory and letting any dog who cares to sniff decide if he wants to challenge the marker.
Young dogs may not lift their leg until they are 18 - 24 months old. They may choose not to mark territory in that manner or to invite challenge. On the other hand he may simply be covering the scent of a dog that has peed on the ground before and then squatting would be to only way to achieve this.
Don't worry about it, be grateful that he is house-broken. He will lift it when he's ready.
I once had a shepherd who would only lift his leg when out for a walk but in his own yard always chose to squat.

There is nothing wrong with your dog squatting like a girl. When I was a kid we had a brown-terrier-mix who squatted like a girl. He probably still does, I wouldn't know. He lives with someone I don't like to visit.
Anyways don't try to rush it. Your dog will start "hiking" his leg when he is ready. My grandmother has a maltese who rather than "hike" his leg will throw both of his back legs up in the air and walk around like that until he is done peeing. And now his son is doing it, too! Just goes to show, every dog has his own way of daying things, lol.
Btw, being nuetered has little to do with it, Browny Bear (As we called him) was nuetered and still squatted to pee.

he will do it naturally when he is ready - if he hangs around other dogs and they are all female it might take a little longer than normal. there is no real "age" that it starts. I have known male dogs to do it for years.

is there a problem with him squatting?

Most male dogs will begin to do this with age. Many will be over a year before they begin. But why do you care? He's good about going outside isn't that what matters?

There is really no way to train them, they learn this on their own. My husky will do both. Lift or squat. It is the younger age, give him time and he should just start doing it.

it depends what he is peeing on. take him for walks where there are lots of trees and fire hydrants so he has to lift if he wants to leave his scent. my un-neutred male sqats like a girl too if he is peeing on something low to the ground. he is almost 3

'How do you get a male puppy to lift his dog when peeing?'

Well let's see now... first you need to send him to the gym five times a week...
