I've been to many funerals and every one of them has a preacher telling me the person is in heaven.
I sit there and listen, knowing they are sleeping in the grave until the resurrection. This is the whole purpose of the resurrection.
The preacher either does not believe what the Bible says or he is trying to instill false hope in the pews.
Death is a very vulnerable time for most, and those who have lost a loved one would like to think that their loved ones are in a much better place.
But what the preacher is saying is a lie.
Is it any wonder it so hard to get the atheist to understand Christians when they each come up with their own "IDEAS" of what the Bible says instead of actually believing "WHAT" the bible says.

If you were to get a concordance and this book: Vine's Expository Dictionary, You would have more to go on. I think that a part of your problem is that you are relying on an English translation to discover the deeper things in the Bible. Good job. It takes dedication to reach that point.
1 Corinthians 15:55
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
That's a clue.
EDIT: You can find it in many places. Revelation will show you judgements taking place before New Heaven and New Earth. Also take a look at the rest of I Corinthians 15.
48As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.
49And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
50Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
51Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

I even have questioned approximately that. The be conscious translated "heaven" basically ability "the sky" interior the unique Greek and Hebrew. And the Bible would not say something in any respect approximately "going to heaven" after dying. The Jews believed that the soul exchange right into a function of the physique, and that the ineffective have been actually 'asleep.' The Pharisees additionally maintained that the physique could at some point be resurrected. The early Christians and Hellenized Jews took the Greek view and maintained that the soul entered an incomplete, and actually senseless state after dying, the place it exchange into incapable of standard reasoning. for this reason the souls under the alter cied out for the resurrection (interior the e book of Revelation). you could the comparable theory interior the Odyssey, the place the souls of the ineffective are incapable of rational theory until eventually they drink the blood from Odysseus' sacrifices. The be conscious translated "hell" basically ability "grave" interior the previous testomony. interior the hot testomony it is the two "grave," "Hades" (that senseless state), or "gehenna" (greater or less translated: the city unload). The word translated "for ever" is frequently "age of a while," and refers back to the top of this age. Scripture would not instruct that the ineffective stay in "hell" consistently - it teaches that they descend into the grave, or hades, until eventually the top of this age.

The bible is explicit about being dead. You are dead waiting for the resurrection.
Eccl 9:5 For the living know that they will die,
but the dead know nothing;
they have no further reward,
and even the memory of them is forgotten.
Matt 9:24he said, "Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep." But they laughed at him.
John 11:11After he had said this, he went on to tell them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up." 12His disciples replied, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better." 13Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. 14So then he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead, 15and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him." NIV
There is a concept of death. You are truly dead after three days. In Matt: 9:24 the three days have not passed. While in John 11:14 the three days were met.
As for Eccl 9:5, it merely states the obvious. Being alive is better than being dead. The Christian hope is that there is more than death.

From what I get from the word of God is this: you are in a place of waiting when you die. You wait until the time when God judges both the quick and the dead. At this time I think is when it is decided if you go to hell or heaven. But people seem to see things in this after life ( near death experience) in which they describe a world similar to ours only better. This could be the waiting space. This is only a theory. I believe heaven to be something beyond what we can conceive. I hope this helps on your quest for the Truth.

If man has an immortal soul, there is no death, only continued life somewhere. But the Bible says "the wages of sin is death."
The fact that Matthew 10:28 said God can *destroy* the soul in hell (actually, Gehenna), shows that the soul can be *destroyed*, it says nothing about being tormented. As Ezekiel said, "the soul that sinneth, it shall die."
Ecclesiastes 9:5 is a good quote. The dead know nothing until they are resurrected to life again.

Jesus said to the theif on the cross. "Today you shall be with me in paradise. I believe it was Paul who said "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" Do you remember Jesus telling the story of the poor man Lazurus who died and so did the rich man? The rich man went to hell and the Lazurus went to heaven. God has a plan to raise everyone from the dead and then the judgement. For those who have put their trust in Him and in His son Jesus, He intends to give new bodies that will never die. In fact He says He will destroy death, hell and the grave. Good news huh? I believe Jesus used the word "sleep" to calm everyone and to show that He could raise the dead as easy as you or I could wake someone up.

Matthew 8:12 the children of darkness are cast into outer darkness where there SHALL BE WEEPING AND GNASHING OF TEETH. JESUS FURTHER DESCRIBES HELLS FOREVER TORMENT AND HEAVENS JOY FOR THOSE THAT RECEIVE HIM AS SAVIOR-- IN REVELATION CHAPTERS 19-22
your body 'sleeps in the earth' and the soul awaits resurrection at the point of death-Jewish custom is it leaves the body after 3 days.
the book of Ecclesiastes is 'the wisdom of man' God had it put into the bible to show the thinking of mankind-'nothing is new under the sun' at the end of the book it says it is all folly except to know God.
its all about choices and heaven and hell too= that says Jesus never sinned but he didnt die for my sins or that here is no real hell (Daniel 12:2 says its an aborance forever)-maybe he should read John 3 about repenting and the new birth and the later chapters describing salvation and the death burrial and resurrection.
stay a peace keeper -its not easy when -people are deluded and reject Jesus and or his words judgement ("The one that rejects my words, shall be judged by them in the last day." John 12:48)
the one group they say they believe in Jesus as a good prophet and Messiah to return soon bodily too. Not just to come into our heart when we pray "Jesus I am sorry for my sins, come into my heart and help me, be my friend."
truely Jesus is my best friend, and He promised this in Revelation 3:19&20 "I love you and knock on your heart door to come in and deliver from sin to be your friend, when you ask me in." sup means to fellowship-in close friendship
prayin for you and we serve Jesus in love not in fear of hell, He corrects His own once we let him into our heart.
Works for me and heaven is a joyous place the other is for those that reject Jesus joy and salvation-otherwise it would be do unto others whatever you please and then just die into the earth one day of murder, old age or of some disease.

Your soul is eternal. Earth is like a school. So, when you die (physical death) your soul still survives, just not in body unless you decide to reincarnate. How do you get the Heaven? First Heaven is not so much a place as a state of being, a state of consciousness. You do not go to heaven, you grow to heaven. So practice, Loving God, Loving Others and Loving Yourself and you will be on the right path.
