I ran to the store for smokes and the song came on while I was stuck in line--heard it a thousand times before and never thought about it, but doesn't it sound like Mom snapped and killed Dad? Why wouldn't he be in a cemetary with a proper headstone?

Sister cries out from her baby bed
Brother runs in feathers on his head
Momma's in her room learning how to sew
Daddy's drinking beer, listening to the radio
Hank Williams sings "Kaw Liga" and "Dear John"
And time marches on, time marches on
Sister's using rouge and clear complexion soap
Brother's wearing beads and he smokes alot of dope
Momma is depressed, barely makes a sound
Daddy's got a girlfriend in another town
Bob Dylan sings "Like a Rolling Stone"
And time marches on, time marches on

Bridge
The south moves north, the north moves south
A star is born, a star burns out
The only thing that stays the same is
Everything changes, everything changes
Sister calls herself "Sexy Grandma"
Brother's on a diet for high cholesterol
Momma's out of touch with reality
Daddy's in the ground beneath the maple tree
As the angels sind an old Hank Williams song

Time marches on, Time marches on
Time marches on, Time marches on

thats the beautiful thing about art in all its forms, not only does in mean what the artist intended but it also affects those who are exposed to it and who then interpret it with their own eyes.

Its entirely possible that the local cemetary is lined with Maples and 'Daddy' got a end plot. and its plausible that Momma found out about the 'girlfriend in another town' and still killed him,or he drank himself to a bad liver, or he got an STD and died, but gave it to the wife first leading to her 'dementia' there are as many ways to interpret the song as their are people who hear it.

I personally paid more attention to the fact that its more about Brother and Sister, and the ways their world changed, the first verse is essentially "Leave it to Beaver land", then they move on and go "Up in Smoke" and finally in the last verse they are "Old Hippies" who have gone from doing drugs to taking pills. They are the Baby boom, and they have seen and done a lot my friend.

Must feel good to have people praying for you.
But I think I see what you mean in the next two lines:

Momma's out of touch with reality
Daddy's in the ground beneath the maple tree

And everybody lives happily ever after.

But actually I think it's just a view of the future. Mommy has alzheimer, and daddy is dead and buried in the garden, on the spot he preferred himself.
