I'm fifteen, 5'1", and weigh about 88 pounds. For health reasons, I'm supposed to gain weight, but doing so is difficult because I don't want to get "big," if you know what I mean. Today, my mom's making pancakes in a few hours, so she told me to have a light breakfast. I wasn't hungry but knew that I should probably eat something. She wouldn't let me drink just a glass of milk because she wants me to gain some pounds, so I ate a banana. The banana was black on the peel in some places and it felt pretty soft. Later, though, I felt bad because I could've eaten a rice cake for only 50 cals instead of the 100 and something cals in the banana. I didn't even drink milk with the banana because I felt guilty. But, again, I could have eaten the rice cake without any milk and have had less cals. I don't know if what I did was right or wrong...I'm thinking the banana had more nutrients, but don't really know since it might have been overripe.

People don't get 'big' from eating bananas. If all you ever ate was bananas, and you ate enough of them to always feel full, you'd never be overweight. A banana with a few soft spots isn't any worse. People get big from eating food high in fat. Especially when they combine them with sugars. Then you have to add in the amount of time a person spends moving around. People who burn lots of calories can eat more than people who sit around all day.

You wrote a lot about that one banana. Seems you're spending more time analyzing it than you did digesting it. Here's a sight that shows you exactly how much of each type of food you should be eating everyday. It's not about diets, it's about nutrition. It even has free tools you can use to track exercise and daily food intake. If you try to eat the way it shows you, your body would find it's correct and natural weight. You'd also know you were getting proper nutrition. Then you can relax, forget about 'dieting', and have other things to focus your thoughts on.

Judging from your height, weight and age, it sounds like you should probably be eating a lot more than just a banana! I can understand that you don't want to get "big". In the society we live in today, there is a lot of pressure for women to be thin. HOWEVER, there is no substitution to being healthy.

Being too underweight has serious consequences on your body, one of which is you could lose your period, and it will impact your ability to have children in the future if it continues.

Perhaps you and your mom could go together to see a nutritionist to work out an eating plan for you. That way, you will know that you are eating enough calories, and getting the nutrients you need, and you'll know that what you're eating isn't going to make you fat.

Why would it be a bad idea? A banana's a great thing to eat in the middle of the night; it can help you sleep.

Bananas are great energy foods. I always keep some in the house. My daughter always grabs one to eat in the morning along with her yogurt. Don't feel guilty about eating healthy. One banana is more nutritious than a bag of rice cakes. Overripe bananas are easier to digest than the firmer, yellow bananas.

Good for you for not wanting to be a fatty. Bananas are good for you. just cut5 the soft pert out and eat the rest if it tastes all right. First eat what you crave, your body kind of knows if you let it. Get a scale and eat as much as you want until you start to gain too much, then cut back. You should gain a little, but not too fast. Depends on your frame. Some of us are like bulldogs and some are like greyhounds. greyhounds are prettier, but if you are a bulldog, just be a nice one.

Don't fret so much about a simple thing like an overripe banana. Unless you fell sick, a few more or less calories are not such a big deal. Eat what you like and what is healthy.

ok if your having these feelings of guilt over what you eat, you need to see both your doctor and a councelor/phychiatrist about eating disorders. at 5'1" 115 is normal weight and lloks good in a bikini. But you need to still eat healthily, but not so little! the doc wants you to gain muscle and healthy fat, not candy bars and cake fat. so hit the gym and gain some muscle mass as well. see the doctor asap before you get seriously ill and cause muscle and tissue damage from being so underweight!

Your body needs fuel to live. I would guess you have already received medical and perhaps psychological counseling for all of this. You are messing with your fate. I am keeping you on my heart today.
