Its terrible to remove, you might be better getting someone in to do it for you or getting that new stuff that covers it. I dont envy you...lol

No it is a pain - I had to remove it room by room from an entire house.
After trying various methods i found the best was as follows.
Get a Stanley knife and score the wall - do each score about 4/5 inches apart and make sure you do not cut into the plaster underneath.
get an ordinary wall paper steamer stripper.
go over the wall using the steamer in your left hand. hold it on the wall for about 2 minutes (depending on how thinck the artex is.)
Use a wall paper scrapper in your right hand to take off each small section as it softens.
it does work

It depends on how old your artexing is. artexing used to be made with asbestos so I would get that checked out with a professional company who specialise with dealing with asbestos. DO NOT listen to the people that have said remove it yourself, getting it checked out. I had mine checked and I was given the all clear and I used a skimmer to skim the walls it works great to cover up the grooves.

Oh and Boy boy - your wrong mate. My sister has artexing on her walls and she has asbestos in them and she is currently living with me and driving me mad with her four kids.

i disagree with boy boy, Artex was definitely used in UK during 60s & 70s. May be better to get it skimmed over by a plasterer

Steam it off, as if it was wallpaper. Some old artex contains asbestos, so make sure you keep it damp, as the dust could be harmful.
