John Nicholson, Samuel Hill, and Will Knights founded Gideons International in 1899 in Boscobel, Wisconsin. They began leaving a bible in each room they stayed in. By 1908, the idea had grown into leaving a bible in every room of a hotel. The bibles can be identified by their emblem, a white jar on a navy background with red flame at the top, and a yellow circle around it. This is mostly printed in gold on the covers. Gideons is a Christian organization and now distributes bibles in many different colors based on who the bibles are intended; for example, camouflage for the military, light green college students, etc. If you'd lilke to know more about the organization, I've posted a couple of links in the source section.
