Veggies, basmati rice, beans, pasta, and olive oil are all good starts. Ground sirloin instead of ground chuck, boneless skinless chicken breasts, seafood, lean boneless pork loin are all good choices for meats. If you have the time, try to make your own sauces instead of buying jarred stuff with preservatives and sodium. And the only thing you should buy from the freezer case is frozen veggies. Everything else there is processed. Oh, and it only takes a few minutes to make your own salad dressing, and if the recipe calls for say 1/2 cup olive oil, you can get away with 1/3 cup or a smidge less. You'll never miss it. Buy lots of herbs and spices and garlic for flavor. Get half and half instead of heavy cream.
And always read the labels for fat and sodium and cholesterol content. It's OK to have some fat, just watch the portion sizes. I put myself on a lower fat lower sodium years ago and it made quite a difference!
Good luck!

I have found that kids and family will devour fruits and vegetables AS LONG AS THEY ARE CUT AND PEELED.
Peel and section five oranges, chill them and put them out on the table in a bowl and they'll be gone before you know it. Peel and slice a bowl full of apples and serve it with dinner and see what happens. Also can add some berries or cherries too. Same with cut vegetables.
I have a big round plastic dish that's divided into sections with a lid. I put cut up fruits and veggies, a different one in each section, and keep it in the fridge. Healthy food ready to grab at any time!
Also try this high protein dip for cut up vegetables, for some reason everyone likes to dip.
1 16 oz carton of low-fat cottage cheese
1/4 cup low fat milk
1 tbsp mayonnaise
1 envelope Hidden Valley ranch dressing mix.
Put all ingredients in the blender, buzz until smooth. Chill before serving with cut up vegetables.
Thin with extra milk for dressing instead of dip.
These little tricks have kept my family eating fresh fruits and vegetables for years.

Keep your pantry well stocked...
Whole grain pasta's
Brown and wild rices
Canned kidney and black beans
Canned tomatoes (do not get the seasoned or flavored ones - too much sodium added)
Whole grain crackers
Extra virgin olive oil
Low sodium chicken and vegetable broths
With these and other items, you can whip together a healthy meal in no time.
Do not buy canned veggies - low in nutrition, high in sodium
Also, in the freezer, try to keep some frozen pasta's - like cheese ravioli, and also a few bags of frozen veggies. Fresh is always best, but it is good to keep bags of peas, spinach, etc. in case the fresh runs out!
Always try to shop on the outskirts of the grocery store first - veggies, fish, meat, dairy...stay away from frozen dinners and processed foods as much as you can.

Veggies and dip to snack on is good. Things like popcorn, though it has no nutritional value, is low in fact and a good filler. Also may want to go ahead and go down to fat free milk. My kids love it! Yogurt is good as well. Keep fruits around also. Juice (with real fruit juice) instead of soda.
Make sure to always serve veggies with dinner and look to buy meats that are better for you like chicken. Get on the internet also, there are alot of great low fat, healthy recipes right at your fingertips.
If you are willing to pay weightwatchers.com has some great recipes, thousands of them. It's fairly low to join but can offer alot of help and recipes for your family.
Have fun!

I went through this when I went vegan. Part of the reason I did it was because my dad's cholesteral was so high! I thought having healthier food in the house would encourage him to eat better, and it did.
So my first suggestion is, eat well yourself. Buy things that you would want to eat - no sense in buying tofu if no one wants to eat it. But strawberries, blueberries and raspberries are always yummy and more popular with the teens than apples and carrots. Try to phase out things like sodas and potato chips for juice and tortilla chips. Try introducing leaner meats as well - turkey instead of ham and lean steak instead of hamburgers.
Good luck!

There are many vegetable recipes in Mediterranean cuisine. I consider it one of the healthiest and most appetizing. Look for recipes with fish, eggplant, zucchini, artichokes, lentils, chick peas, green beans. Also rice recipes like risotto, paella, and many more. Bon appetti.
