I understand it to mean...
The sound doesn't work.
but that doesn't seem to make sense. It's refering to something being broken in a gym., it's for a spanish course I'm doing. Any ideas?

The sonar doesn't work. "La sonar" refers to the sonar apparatus on a fishing boat, how they got that into a gym I don't know unless it's a brand name for something like a Nautilus machine. This could be the case since "machine" (maquina) is feminine in Spanish so "La Sonar" would be a short way of referring to whatever by its brand name.
Are you sure you wrote this down correctly, as there isn't a conjugated verb in this sentence.

It must be "El sonar no funciona" Sonar as a pronoun means a radar wich works underwater, if a bat hava a radar system, a dolphin have a sonar system.
But as you say it is meaning something broken, i'm pretty sure that it's a computer attached to a work out machine, you know they count calories, count distance, effort, and keep procesing all that info, still it's kind of confusing but that's what i understand in that sentence.

Is the word sonar, which means to sounding, misspelled or misplaced and maybe there should be another word like equipment (equipo) in the sentence- or something else?

maybe one of the machines used in the gym is supposed to give some sort of sound when using it and according to this is broken down.

Ask someone on the Spanish or Argentinian YA.Sonar might be a slang word for a piece of gym equipment.
