I would obviously say no. I don't want to die, and if I say no, I would live. What kind of idiot would say yes? I rememeber during the Columbine Massacre, the two killers asked a girl if she believed in God, and she said yes. She could have survived if she was smart and said no, but she said yes and she was shot.

Yes, duh!!

Do you really think a gun toting maniac gives a shite what you believe in? It is just part of their drama, get a life!!!

When someone holds a gun to my head and asks a question like this, And if I have the impression it might help to do so, I might just lie. It depends on what I think the counter party wants to hear. When I don't know I'd just have to take the risk, and though I'm an atheist, I just can't say what this is right now. The truth has a lot of value for me, but also my life, and statistically it's more likely to get killed for being an atheist than being religious.
Hard question, the answer depends on the situation.

Actually, that story is false. Several testimonies from witnesses prove that it was actually a different girl who was asked that question, and she was actually not killed. The girl originally believed to have been asked that question did not interact with the gunmen at all before being killed.

And honestly, you don't know what the gunman is going to do. Someone like that is clearly unstable, and might shoot you regardless of your answer. And though I could never truly know what I would do in that situation, I would much rather die for saying what I believed in than die for something that was a lie. That would just be irony at its most tragic.

(It should be noted that I am an agnostic)

I was presented with a situation like this in the Detroit area.

To make the story short it ended up with an Arab guy pulling a gun on me and telling me to bow down to Mecca and admit there was no God but Allah and Jesus was not the son of God.

I took his gun away and then he and his friends ran away.

I did not make them do anything except run away.

I like my way of handling it best.

I am a gutless bastard that wants, more than anything, to live - but I would clarify that this gun-toting bastard actually wanted to hear a specific answer. If he/she wants to hear yes, that's what I say. If no, then no it is.

Edit: come to think of it, my best hope for survival here is that I'm at least second in getting asked that question and that #1 DOESN'T MUMBLE. Note to self - if this ever comes up, speak clearly.

I'd take a guess as to what their opinion of the subject is and tell them exactly what they want to hear. Then I'd act like I did believe in god if that was their belief and vice versa.

A lot of people are saying they'd tell the truth of what they believe... I think that a loaded gun pointed at your head has enough force to change what they say, don't you?

They used to do something like that to people in Northern Ireland. They'd ask you to sing the UK National Anthem and if you didn''t know the words it meant you were a Catholic, so BLAM! Or they'd ask you to say the Lord's Prayer and if you left in the bit at the end (the power and glory stuff) it meant you were a Protestant. Or they'd ask you to say the alphabet and if you said "haitch" instead of "aitch" it meant you were a Catholic. Or they'd ask you your name. Some of my friends had two names that they used, one Catholic and one Protestant depending on which area they were in. Great fun (not...)

I guess that would depend on who the maniac with the gun was. If it was someone like Buchanan, Roberteon, Phelps, or Bin Ladin, I'd say yes. If it was a loon like Harris or Klebold, I'd say no.

The point would be to get out of the situation alive. If God were real, I'm pretty sure he'd understand.

Wouldn't the girls have thought of their safety as you (and any other humans) would have thought of? Didn't they know that their lives were at stake when they chose to say yes? It was their choice, according to their faith n love for God, just as saying 'No' is your choice, according to your lack of faith n love for God. If they did not know what was the 'right' answer, at least they knew they had not betrayed their conscience by lying.

yes-because I would get the grace to do it. My own Jewish mom said if I didnt denounce Jesus-she was having a funeral for me and I was out of the Jewish family will. I said Mom I cant take Jesus out of my heart, but even if I could I wouldnt.

Since then we have been reconciled better than ever--being honest pays
Heaven is forever-and when you have faith =trust in Jesus as your savior Messiah and best friend its all good or works together for good
I had a man point a gun in my face and say "If you say one more word about Jesus I will blow your head off." I said "Unless Jesus let's you, you cant even pull the trigger." He put the gun down-and then brought it back to his car and put it away.
death or denounce THIS HAS happend throught the ages-people were burned that translated or were found with copies of the bible -because they would not deny Jesus.

till you truely let Jesus into your heart -you as I once just wont understand. Praying for you, David p.s. believing in Jesus John 3 repented of sin and born again-doesnt change-once He is in your heart "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee." Hebres 13---I serve Jesus because I love him not out of a fear of missing heaven. "Whom the Lord recieveth he corrects every one." When your His child he is there to guide you through it all.

One guy? One gun? His @$$ is grass. I'll answer with my fist. Better to die clean (in the defense of self or others' rights) than saying anything the bad man want to please, please, please let me continue my existence, I'll do anything.

Honestly, though... One guy, one gun? If the gun is against my head, then I can reach him. He has NO CHANCE. Remember, if you ever hold someone at gunpoint, do it from 15 ft away. At arm's reach, a gun is nothing but a fool's ego crutch.

I realize that I missed the point of your question, but it seems you are arguing that being a spineless tool for bad men is better than being dead, and I simply cannot agree with that.
