Australia lies from near the equator to 40°S+ in Tasmania. In winter there is snow on the mountains and a skiing industry in NSW Victoria and Tasmania. It is warm to hot and dry in the north, cool to mild in the south and cool to cold in the far south round Melbourne and down in Tasmania.

Look at the Bureau of Meteorology web site at http://www.bom.gov.au for current forecasts as well as the climatic averages all over the country. There is a lot of variability.

Expect it to really be cold in Melbourne and Tasmania June - September. Weather is very unpredictable in Victoria. There's snow up in the mountains like Mt Buller in Vic and Snowy Mountains in NSW.

In the tropics there isn't really a winter, just a wet season, it's pretty cold in Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide. Hot days and cold nights in the desert.
