i don't think that god is a fairytale, but many of the stories from the bible, when taken too literally become fairytales. in my experiences, people do not use these stories to soothe children, but to control them. they use the idea of god to further support and in root their/society's believes of right and wrong. they cause children not only to fear parent's and adults authority and punishment, but god's and hell also.

everyone has. this is normal in a religion and a human mind. but thats why you need o search fr the truth and not just on yahoo answers. look at the scriptures he Torah the Bible the quran and all the different beliefs like Hinduism and Buddhism and atheism. If u truly want to know then have an ope mind and always search. i was christain before i converted to Islam and even in islam we r encouraged to always search fr the truth because knowledge should never be held from someone. in Islam here is something called jihad this means a struggle this can be physically or internally. this is ur jihad as a jihad of all to find truth. as test given to you. may allah give u guidence and ease ur task. if u have any quesions or comments please e-mail me and u may also view my page @ http://www.muslimspace.com/Laila_Mujahidah

The biblical God is too horrible to soothe a child.
I think God was invented to control the masses.

He's not a very soothing fairy tale. A huge enraged man who lives in the sky and burns you eternally if you do the slightest thing he doesn't like? Sounds more like nightmare material to me.

Of course it's just a fairy tale.
Nobody can prove any gods, much less a specific god, exist; many people will tell you their god exists but no others, but will never be able to prove it, even if they think so. Some will threaten you with eternal pain or promise eternal joy to get you to believe in their god; these are all stories, created for people who were scared long before we understood the universe. Now we have no more reason for these superstitions.

Almost all the time. Then again, with all the negative stuff behind it (The Old Testament, Hell, etc.), I'm not really sure how it would help make many children feel at peace.

Just like Santa Clause, the truth must eventually be learned of the existance of (or rather the lack of) God

I have toyed with that idea a few times. Then I had a spiritual experience and found that there was something more to those fairy tales.
