my dog has what sounds like the dry heaves and nothing comes up.not kennell cough or allergies any idea?

First off it would be good for him to get a check up with his vet. That is the best way to know for sure what is wrong. You didn't say anything about his personality, but if he is the type of dog who pulls on his leash, and you use a normal collar on him, he can actually damage his throat by pulling against the collar, and that can make him cough. For dogs like that it is actually more humane to get a prong collar, or a harness if you can control him in a harness. A prong collar redistributes the pressure on the neck, as well as making a dog less likely to pull because they don't like the feel of the prongs. But your best bet is to have a vet have a look at him and come up with an answer.
