Never 'officially' dated or got out with anyone. I'm rather timid and for the longest time didn't have much interest in dating. Now it's all started peaking on me and I feel a bit antsy. So the question is how do I start the dating process? I don't want to come off as too desperate and just throw myself at some guy. Guys don't like clingy girls anyhow, not that I am the clingy type. I'm just a bit lonely and anxious, and never having done this before I can't help but wonder what it's like. Pathetic, I know.

I did forget to mention my age. I am 27. Also the guy friend who I'll be staying with has a girlfriend, so that's out.

WOW. Your short dialogue makes you the most wanted woman on Y!A I assure you. But I could give you a better answer if I knew your age. Assuming you are at least 21, then I recommend these things:

1. Groom immaculately
2. Dress nicely, maybe even some cleavage appropriately
3. Study and/or work harder than ever
4. Spend an hour a day in the library
5. Spend an hour a day at the gym
6. Honor your parents and teachers
7. Get involved in a worthy school or community function
8. Volunteer a few hours a week for a worthy cause
9. Help someone every day
10.Go to Church
11.Invite your friends to Church
12.Take group dance lessons
13.SMILE

Good Luck

ADDED: Dating is a good way to get to know people and to decide which people are good to have in your life and which people are not good to have in your life. Don't look at dating as searching for a mate, or as desperation relief from boredom. Consider it just another means of socializing and exchanging pleasantries.

Well how about you and me go for a little midnight stroll on the beach and I will tell you all about it. No really though, just go hang out with your friends in public places were people your age like to hang out. I am sure that someone will notice you and will sweep you off your feet. Good luck.

nothing pathetic about it. I commend you on your self control and ability to keep men a bay. We are a lot to deal with and I think your best bet is to make friends with someone and stay single and happy. Dating is something you might not enjoy.
