People like Jack Johnson, John L. Sullivan and Bob Fitzsimmons testified to the greatness of Joe Gans claiming he was the greatest little guy to lace up the gloves. His power in either hand and world class defensive skill was universally acknowledged. Two fights in two days, the second being against Sam Langford after an all night train ride to get to Langford was a testimony too Gan's toughness as if coming back from a crushed orbital socket from a head butt to quickly KO then champ Frank Erne two years later in their second fight wasn't enough.

I wish I could disagree with Keith and Smitty and say that Joe
Gans would defeat Henry Armstrong, the argument is there to be made, but even with the greatness of Gan's, Armstrong was just as great a champion, with equal skill and toughness.
Gans and Hank are two all time greats from different eras, and the answer is in truth just opinon. I find it difficult to agree with the prior answerers on principle, but Henry Armstrong and his career warrent equal consideration, and I give it.

In principle I disagree with Smitty and Keith and call this one a draw, and leave it at that out of respect for those who have a greater tolerance for arrogance and treachery that I. I give bluedevil a thumbs up for his answer, but I do not feel comfortable picking one over the other in this one, both combatants are too evenly matched for my taste.

Draw

Armstrong by ko. Gans fought in an era where most fighters only threw a couple punches at a time before falling into a clinch, so all Joe had to worry about was a couple shots flying at him at a time. He would have no way to defend against the avalanche of leather Armstrong would be dropping on him. He could block the first couple of shots, but what about the 8 or 9 that would follow right after it?

With Armstrong you're talking about a natural lightweight who went in and slugged it out with Welter and Middleweights. Gans fought a very young, green Sam Langford(I doubt he would have fought as well had Sam already grown into his natural 160-170 lb size). Bat Nelson gave Gans all he could handle in their fights. Homicide Hank is stronger, faster and harder hitting than Nelson.

All in all, Henry was much too strong and durable(and busy) for Gans to hold off.

Devon P this would have been a great fight between two all time greats! Gans was the old master and was a very scientific boxer. Armstrong was a pressure fighter with great punching power. I believe that it would have been a very close fight but in a slight upset I believe that Gans would outbox Homicide Hank qand win a split decision with the public demanding a rematch. Good question sir.
