Here's something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing:

Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two would know about. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it!

The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating ... you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle.

Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard.

Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it a homemade feeling.

The most precious gift you can give to someone that age is your time. Most of us are too busy to slow down and really just talk and reflect with our elderly relatives. That is the one thing they appreciate most. So yes, get him some kind of gift (many good ones have already been suggested) but really try to give him some quality time to just talk with you and be with you.

In the end, it will be a gift to both of you. My own dad passed away a couple of years ago and I wish I had spent more time with him.

Depending on any dietary restrictions, one of the cutest ideas I heard of was giving the birthday person a jar with 80 candy kisses in it. You could select 80 of any item that is inexpensive and that the birthday person would like.
For most folks turning 80, the most meaningful gift is time spent with loved ones!

A great idea for a personal and unique gift is a handmade painting made from a photo that you send.

The prices are reasonable and the outcome is amazing.

At his age, he should've have had everything he ever wanted, and perhaps not want any more items. This is, unless of course, there IS nothing he desires at the moment.

If this is the case, I would suggest something hand made, such as album made with memories from his past with family.

You might ask him or his care taker for opinions.

If you have time it would be really thoughtful of you to put together a scrapbook highlighting some of the best memories you have of your dad.

Wishing you a fabulous celebration... Cheers!
