Hi
It was fun ... but you did have dishes to wash! And chances are there were no real errors, when you lost the whole bag ... and you could pop the extra corn kernels if there were any leftovers ...
Before you begin, make sure your popcorn is fresh! I understand that once the package is open, you can keep popcorn fresh in a humidor (tobacco jar with a little sponge attached to the top; it keeps loose tobacco fresh) ... but I never did that

Method:
First: melt a little butter to pour over the popcorn when it is done; set it aside
Second: get out the salt shaker
Third: put a 10" or 12" skillet on the stove and turn it to medium heat
Fourth: put a little oil in the skillet and spread it all over the inside bottom of the skillet (you could use clarified butter or ghee, also: it does not burn
Fifth: put popcorn to cover the bottom of the skillet, COVER it; do not be curious to see why you hear no popping or else you might end up with popcorn all over the stove in case you lift the lid at just the wrong moment (just as it is starting and you did not hear it) ... and do shake the skillet so that the unpopped popcorn does not burn before it pops
Sixth: do not take the cover off the skillet until all the popping stops ..
Seventh: Pour the popcorn into a large bowl, drizzle the melted butter over it and add salt it, to taste..

takes about 10 minutes or so

After it is all done ...you can add parmesan
or finely grated cheddar ... or whatever you wish ... or make popcorn balls with a caramel coating

Must have been pretty bleak.

Actually, I grew up without a microwave, we had to make our popcorn in this special popcorn popping machine and then put the butter and salt on. It was a lot of work.

edit: I'm only 19 years old, the machine plugged in and everything, it wasn't *that* much work.

Less expensive and better tasting.
I still pop my own. Use Peanut Oil or Coconut Oil if you can afford. Usually it taste great like this. Sometimes I spring for the Real Butter too.
I have like this big 5 or 10 quart pan with a lid, it like those they fry Turkeys in. By the time a person can microwave one bag of popcorn, I can make enough for 5 + people. Only problem, you do have to wash your popping pan later.

My grandfather used to pop popcorn in bacon grease. It was the most delicious popcorn in the world. He'd make it on Sundays when he and my dad and I would watch football. That was twenty years ago. Now that my dad died, my grandfather got older and more health-conscious, and I have moved on to bigger and better things, I miss it. So life IMO was just wonderful before microwave popcorn. But life with it is certainly convenient at least, if not as tasty.

Before microwave popcorn, popcorn could be bought in sort of metal skillet things with popcorn inside. Then you would pop it over the stove! And it probably stunk! I love microwave popcorn!

Before the microwave, people use a hot air popcorn popper or they used a good ole' fashioned pan and oil on the top of the stove. In some ways it was better. Hot air popper produced no added calories unless you added them while popping. On top of the stove you could add alot of extra butter while popping and it would distribute evenly. You should try both methods. Its not as fast but very satisfying.

Life was just fine in my opinion. I suppose the microwave is handy for steaming veggies and reheating leftovers or that coffee you forgot to drink while it was hot, but I could do without it. I would never actually use it for cooking, and I don't eat prepared foods (i.e., frozen dinners or other meals, side dishes, sandwiches, pizza, etc.). If I'm reheating pizza (I makemy own) it goes in the oven... the regular oven (or toaster oven), that is. It would be pretty sad rating our quality of life based on the microwave. (Oops.. I forgot to add that I use a popcorn popper for popcorn and it's great!)

Life in those days was bleak. Scientists have found evidence that women of that era may have actually had to cook using real ingredients and pots and pans, as well as direct heat (layman's terms: "without scary invisible heat waves of doom"). Also, the men of those times were known to have spent their days in the sun, creating crude versions of today's microwave out of rocks, leaves, and a magnifying glass. This did not work of course, and therefore, what we now know as "popped corn" was actually just hard corn kernels covered in dirt and mulch.

It is also believed that when the very first working microwave was invented, the word "hallelujah" was also introduced to our language.
