I know just what you are going through! Scales can be very tricky. Make sure that you are weighing yourself at the same time each day. If you drank a lot of liquids yesterday, your body may still need some time to discard of them. For me, the scale is the "friendliest" if I weigh myself first thing in the morning.

Many trainers will tell you not to weigh yourself daily. Once a week is sufficient, due to this very thing. You could be losing inches (fat), but gaining muscle, which makes it look as if you are gaining weight.

Good luck and don't let that nasty, unfriendly scale get you down! =)

The earlier answer about water weight is correct. When I used to be Super-Nutrition and Fitness Man, working out religiously, and tracking weight before every workout, I was surprised that sometimes I'd actually *lose* weight after eating too much the previous day. Same scales. How much water your body retains and releases fluctuates based on factors such as diet, weather, stress, and exercise.

So don't stress out about the water fluctuations. If you know you're not stressed out, haven't cheated on calories, and have been getting proper exercise, then you know you're headed in the right direction. The scales should indicate trends, not so much day-by-day progress or regression.

What time of day did you weigh yourself each day? How much did you eat/drink during the day and before you weighed yourself? Did you use the same scale? Where are you in your menstrual cycle? Did you use the bathroom before you weighed yourself? Number 1 or Number 2? How much clothes were you wearing during each weigh-in? Did you consume a lot of salt, or other foods that cause water-retention? The list goes on...

Dont weigh yourself every day, once a week is usually sufficient and weigh at t he same time every day, if you weighed yourself in the morning yesterday and the evening to day.. all the fluid and food from the whole day will be added on .. so make sure to do it only once a week.

Same scale?
Also, if you had just eaten, the 4lbs would be from the food, while when you were the lighter weight, maybe time had gone by since youve eaten, also getting your period can make you gain 3-5lbs. Some scales are a little off. Try weighing yourself at the same time and after youve digested your food.

You should weigh yourself at the same time every time and you should also weigh yourself naked. Your weight will fluctuate from day to day but only by 1-2 pounds and its water weight, like when you get your period. I gain like 2 -3 pounds when im on my peroid.

2 possible reason
1. No physical activity. If you sleep after eating,.. the body will store all the food that you eat. Remember You burn calories by physical activities (walking, swimming, climbing the stairs, biking etc).

2. You did not eat your breakfast. If the body sense that you did not eat in the morning, the time you will eat the body will store all the calories because the body is thinking that you won't eat again (this is a survival mechanism of the body).

Maybe you had clothes or shoes on? it is possible to gain 4lbs overnight but they are probablly not really going ot stay on you, your body does wierd things lots of chemical reactions. sometimes i weight myself after going to the bathroom and for some reason I weight more. have you drank any water, water weight can add alot. my guess is it is your clothes though because shoes sweats and a shirt can easily add 4 lbs.
