An active subwoofer has a Class D amplifier built in.

A passive subwoofer depends on your sound system's amplifier.

In my case my two Velodyne subwoofer depend on a Pure Discreet Class A Threshold amplifier.

Twisted - I don't get 'poorer' sound out of my Threshold.....rethink that statement!

Actives are usually the better choice. When the designer designs a passive sub, all he can control is box parameters and driver (speaker) choice.

With an active design, a good manufacturer can compensate for driver anomalies, phase problems (that all drivers exhibit), and a host of other things such as frequency response and the like. The best ones are done this way!

Mine is just gonna be an additional info for you about the difference between those two types of subs.
An active sub usually hums:) Because it has its own amplifier inside. Also, because of the same reason its own amplifier is immensely defenceless against any sort of interferences such as RF. Furthermore, these devices could be affected by its own transformers (As mine did)!! This loud humming noise can sometimes get you maddened if you are unaware of where it's derived from. You have to be able to tune it very fine if you're searching for good sound.

The basic difference in the two subs are:
active : has it own power or amplifier source built into the sub.
passive : means it has no power or amplifier built in, usually has to be connected to an outside amp or receiver for it's power.

Active - built in amplifier, better quality sound.

Passive - no amplification (it draws it's power parasitically from your main amplifier), poorer quality sound.

Active subs sound better because the amplifier is 'gained matched' specifically for the speaker and can be separately controlled from the other speakers. The bass notes/sounds are clearer and more defined, than with a passive sub.

active subs have an amplifier in their enclosure so they power themselves. while a passive sub is like your speakers it runs off your amplifier's power.

An active sub is one that is powered and passive is one that is not.

Active means that it is self-sufficient. It has a plug for the sound to go in, and it has a power cord coming out of the back.

Passive means that it doesnt have its own power, and you have to run a pretty thick cord into it from your mixer.
