Because they might ACTUALLY HELP someone. Christians aren't interested in the facts or in really helping others they just want people to agree with them.

They want to be, pick your favorite anti:
anti-abortion, anti-stem cell research, anti-Papillomavirus inoculation, anti-condom, anti-pill, anti-sex, anti-peace, anti-reason, anti-logic, anti-rationality.

They like their delusional little world as it is and don't want it disrupted with science or facts. They just want to stand behind their religion, their war president, and their self-righteous ignorance.

I fear that the politicians who fear it have seen Frankenstein too many times. If I mean IF there is any chance that stem cells could improve lives and maybe even save some I am all for it. I would love to see Michael J Fox on another sit com. Among many others. It seems to me that stem cells from umbillical cord donated by the parents of the infant can be used without govt. intervention. So. ladies let's get with it. I would but I am a grandma. PS. To Catholic above me, read this, get educated. The umbillical cord comes from a living infant.

Because research on embryonic stem cells requires the destruction of a living human being, it is against God’s will. No amount of promised “benefit” to society or to medical knowledge can justify the killing of a human for spare parts. The end does not justify the means. It is never ethical—in fact, it is morally reprehensible—to mark people for death in order to conduct utilitarian experiments on their body parts.

In contrast, research on adult stem cells does not require the loss of life. adult stem cells have versatility and a proven track record, and they lack the moral difficulties of embryonic stem cells. Therefore, we believe that research on adult stem cells is a legitimate field of study, well within the will of God.

Nothing. Stem cell research is just another step in science. People become nervous about change. When IVF was first developed people freaked ! but now its widely accepted, because people understand and appreciate its importance now, and all the what-ifs have been put to rest. As people learn about stem cell research they will begin to learn and accept that it has nothing to do with killing babies or cloning freaky super human people, but that it will enhance lives, save lives and cure illnesses.

A wise man once said that people fear what they don't understand.

It's a utilitarian question. Do you believe that if someone is going to die anyways we can experiment on them? What about prisoners about to face the death penalty in the US? what about the experiments done on prisoners during WWII for scientific purposes? Nazi scientists defended themselves after the war by saying 'these people were going to be killed anyways.' Or using the tissues and samples taken from these people after they died, for scientific purposes? There are cases and cases of these samples: do you think they should be used today for scientific purposes? what about experimentation on live animals? since they're going to die anyways.

In this case there is also the question of the moral status of those 'cells'. If you believe that an embryo has the moral status of a human being, then you believe it is just as wrong to experiment on them as it is to throw them out. If on the other hand you believe that there is no moral problem with destroying the embryo, then presumably you have no problem with experimenting on it.

elementary, my dear david. stem cell research is wrong only in the way of embryonic stem cell research- that is, taking a fetus out of a mother, getting its stem cells(murdering the child) and testing the cells. i see really not many other ways of getting the stem cells, but all i have heard is that embryonic stem cell research is the DEVIL (lol waterboy :) )

So you would be willing to kill a baby for research that has been proven to be totally ineffective.......as in not one single cure or treatment has been obtained or even has promise of be obtained from fetal stem cells?

Even when it has been proven that ADULT stem cell have been used for cures and various treatments. These have been proven to work time and time again.

something is wrong with this picture

They fertilize the eggs and grow fetusus to kill them for the stem cells.
Life begins at conception and calling a devoloping human a zygot does not change the fact that it is a baby!

The selfish "right to lifers" that make tons of money for their campaigns and the drug lobbyists who make a fortune off of our diseases and contribute to those Bozos, would go out of business if we could clone organs for the many ill patients for transplantation. Diabetes could be cured if a functional pancreas could be cloned- no anti-rejection drugs needed. They would rather have thousands die for their profit from diseases that could be curable --but strangely enough they're the same ones who wouldn't pull the feeding tube and stay out of Terri Schiavo's life- they don't make sense.
There are many ways of getting stem cells without a single abortion- placentas, for example- that are thrown away by the thousands.
They just like to add that little controversy in there to make themselves sound so high, mighty, and moral.
Why do so many idiots believe that a baby must die in order to obtain stem cells? They have been scared and horrified into believing that- that's why -and they don't bother to look for a rational, scientific solution.

I think it has something to do with a vision of what could come . What logically and legally could follow is much worse than Orwell had envisioned. That's progress for you.
