The engine size, powertrain, and axle ratio will make the biggest difference, depending on the model (XLS/XLT are standard arrays on most of the SUVs - Escape, Explorer, Expedition). Although on sometimes on an XLS you can get a manual transmission whereas on an XLT it is often a standard automatic. If that is what you mean, then yes, an XLS (manual) will get slightly better 1-3 mpg fuel economy than a XLT (automatic). Also, sometimes an XLS will have a smaller axle ratio (3.23) versus an XLT (3.55 or 3.73); this will also yield a slight 1-2 mpg improvement.

thats usually an interrior package and doesn't have any effect on performance or mileage however things like 2wheel drive and 4 wheel drive and differences in engine size are what make the diciding factor on mileage and performance.
