In the beginning it was fifteen commandments written on three pages with five commandments per page. Moses screwed up and lost one page before it could be recorded in the bible. Hence the ten commandments

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking (or why you are asking it!). From a Bibllical perspective, G_d created the 10 Commandments and gave them to Moses. Plain and simple. If you are asking why G_d chose THOSE specific commandments as opposed to something else, well, I can't answer that. :-(
From a modern perspective, if we all followed the 10 commandments, life would be, in my opinion, better and less dangerous.
That's the serious answer.... now for a non-serious one.... Actually, there were 15 commands according to History of the World Part 1. Yes, 15... but Moses dropped the third tablet so there are now only 10.

I believe that the "Original Tablets" that Moses carried down from the mountain contained a "Fuller Law" than just the 10 commandments.. but Israel could not refrain from their Idol worshipping for the time that Moses was on the mountain so then Moses broke them and went back up for the "Lesser Law".. which is the 10 commandments.. that Israel COULD follow.

I do not know the 10 Christian commandments I do know the 10 commandments which were first given to the Jewish people. They were given by God to Moses, they are a good, sort of crude, but a good set of laws that make sense. It makes more sense then some of the laws of Hammurabi's code.

The ten commandments were written for the Jewish people, not for Gentiles. For us; Jesus made them harder, by condensing
them into two (2): S. Mathews 22:34-40.

I agree with Seethelight, the commandments were not to subdue and control the Israelites but for their own good.looking seriously at the commandments you can see how by adhering to these faithfully their would be a perfect balance of love of God and Neighbor, exactly the result that Jesus held out when He said `A new command I give you, love God and love your neighbor.

The 10 Commandments and the law are in place to show us the standard that GOD requires of his creation in order to be in fellowship with them. It is an instructor that teaches us our true state in this world.
Me personally. I received a big fat "F".
I need a savior, and I found one in Jesus Christ.

Which version?
The 10 Commandments are different -- different order and different wording -- for Catholics, Protestants, and Jews, so you need to specify which version(s) we're talking about.

The were given to Jews. To protect people. : )
When Moses brought the 10 commandments to people, God enabled Him to perform miracles so that people would believe him.

To organize a viable community into a functional, obedient and prosperous army which could claim a divine right to seize property and commit atrocities in the name of their god.
Christianity has no 10 Commandments.
