Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:
"...No baby is born but upon fitra (a natural inclination towards the Oneness of Allah). It is his parents who make him a Jew or a Christian or a Polytheist."
A person said: "Allah's Messenger, what is your opinion if they were to die before that (before reaching the age of adolescence when they can distinguish between right and wrong)? " He said: "It is Allah alone Who knows what they would be doing." (Sahih Muslim, Book #033, Hadith #6426)

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'z Zinad from al-Araj from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
"Every child is born on the Fitra and it is his parents who make him a Jew or a Christian. Just as a camel is born whole - do you perceive any defect?"
They said, "Messenger of Allah, what happens to people who die when they are (very) young?"
He said, "Allah knows best what they used to do." (Imam Malik's Muwatta, Book #16, Hadith #16.16.53)

Yes I did know that. Unfortunately those who do not take the time to understand what the meaning of the word Muslim is will NEVER agree with you.
Peace.

People are answering this question by disagreeing with it yet they do not understand the meaning of the word muslim.
A muslim means someone or something that does what it was created to do hence worshipping/obeying it's creator.
For instance the moon is a muslim because it does what it was created to do and obeys its creator.
The moon however doesn't have a choice people have a choice to believe or not to believe, to obey or not to obey, to submit or not to submit to be a muslim or a non-muslim.
A baby or child that has not yet reached puberty is simply doing as it was created and has not reached the age of accountability where they can choose to believe or disbelieve thus all children are born muslim.
Children are born on a fitrah or natural inclination and it is their parents who teach them otherwise.
If you ask a child where is god they will naturally point up as they believe, this is natural, atheism is unnatural.
As for the major religons; islam, christianity and judaism they all came from the one god through messengers however some of the messengers have had their message distorted resulting in the confusion and division today.
Oh and just to add... someone mentioned earlier that they thought circumsicion was what made someone a muslim
this is not true, a muslim is one up until the age of puberty, after puberty when they are able to make their own decision based on reason and proof it is the one who tesifies and believes that "there is NO diety/idol/person WORTHY of worship (because although other things are worshipped they are not worthy of it) EXCEPT Allah"
Allah means The one and only God in arabic (the Creator, The Sustrainer, The Controller of Affairs, The All hearer the All Knower...)
Hope this clarifies how one becomes a muslim.

Did you know every Muslim is born as a non born again Christian?
Perhaps not but you are most definitely WRONG. this can only be correct to you if you are a Muslim and this is what you believe. i.e I fi decide to make up a religion in the next 20 seconds which I could and might do. I could make it a law (My law) that nobody is born into a specific religion. Then anyone preactising my law will go onto Yahoo answers and say did you know that everyone is born with no specific religion.
Come on think about what you are saying before you brand me a Muslim. Not that I have anything against them or what they practise.
Peace.

I personally believe that nothing but our own views can make us belong to a particular religion or the other.
If my knowledge is right, isn't circumcision the religious ritual to make a person Muslim? Pleez no offence intended.
We are what we grow up to become. Unlike the person above me who says that everyone is born athiest, I'd like to mention that Athiest is a person who does not believe in the existence of God & that does not mean that he shouldn't believe in Religion either.
Bottom line : We belong to the religion of Humanity at birth. Either this, or that we belong to none of the religions when we are born. Its all just a point of view.

the Christian writer Tertullian (2nd-3rd century) said long before Mohammed, 'the soul is naturally Christian'. But I think both Christian and Muslim would agree that the human being cannot avoid a relationship with God, even in ignorance, because God is the Maker and Sustainer of creation.

Yes, Sub'haan Allah,
Allahi baarik fee wa jazak Allah,
sister.
As Allah almighty has taken an oath from all of us before taking birth, when we were in "aalam al arwaah", and this is the reason we witness in present life that "Ashahaadu Allah ilaaha ill Allahu wa ashaadu anna Muhammadan Abduhu wa Rasoolu".

:"allahu la ilaha illa hwa"
you have to believe in that
and once you believe in that you will have that numerous number of pareicipants who simply hate to see that
instead of asking and looking for knowledge they simply go and attack in a meaning less way
yes the hadeeth you mentioned we have learned it
and who would not understand?
it is muslims duty to tell you about islam
then comes to you as your duty to know what is islam
you duty comes even bigger once you have kids
to lead your kid the wrong way??????
so you ought to learn how and what you should do to your kid
it is your responsibility to give your kid the knowledge
if he chooses then differently he is free to do that
so participant seek the trueth
look for it
you might then safe your selves and your kids

I agree, we are all born sinners but not all die sinners. I am forgiven through the blood Christ Jesus, shed for me at Calvary. Through His Grace and Love I stand pure in His eyes. As if I never sinned. Praise The Holy Lamb Of God !!!!
