Dempsey never had trouble with the "big" sluggers save Firpo. Dempsey's problem was with the dancers like Tunney. Smokin Joe seemed to prefer the "dancers" like Ali, as if he enjoyed "hunting" them. Frazier did not fare well with the big sluggers, Bonavena/Foreman for example. Dempsey could "bring em down" with either hand. Smokin Joe Frazier is considered to have possessed a murdurous left hook, regarded second only to Charles "Sonny" Liston's hook. Dempsey's two handed assaults mimmicks Tyson's savagery/ferocity. Tho smokin Joe possessed no substantial punch other than his thunderous left hook, he possessed a near perfect defence that frustrated many top heavy weights. In a fifteen round bout who would win, Dempsey or Frazier?

To be honest I don't even think Liston had a better left hook than Joe, Frazier's left hook may have been the best in the business. You have two of the all time greats, and this one is a tough call because Dempsy was as much a straight ahead puncher as Joe, neither one of these guys knew how to take a backwards step. If there is an edge for either other than Joe's left hook it was that Dempsy had better lateral movement and would hurt you with either hand with equal power. Great match up, and if Joe caught Dempsey coming in it would be curtains for Jack. The blogbaba is old school, and Dempsey with the exception of Tunney was the best of his era. Joe has Jamaica and the Forman beating to live down, and had a tendency to be too brave for is own good. I think Joe would have taken more punishment than his left hook could have made up for and eventually would have lost to Dempsey, but that big left could have turned the fight in the blink of an eye. Tough call & a great match up that is just about even.

Dempsey coming off the canvass for a close controversy clouded decision.

Great fight and good question too sir! This would have been a marquee matchup. Frazier of course had that great left hook and Dempsey had murderous punching power in either hand. Frazier fought better against pure boxers and Dempsey had problems against boxers so this would be an incredible battle of wills in this fight. Both fighters have good chins and good stamina. I pick Dempsey by a very close split decision in this one with a second fight between the two on demand.

Frazier would put constant pressure, with Dempsey not backing down. There would be knockdowns, but lets remember Dempsey is a slugger/swarmer who can hit hard(he broke several of Jess Willards ribs???) and Frazier only had two punches he used all the time(left hook and right body lead shots in close). I see a reminder of Foreman vs Frazier, down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier! Dempsey KO by 6.

Joe's D was better than people realize, watch his fights against Ali (first one) and before that. Dempsey was fairly easy to knock down, so I think Fraizer would pile up too many 10-8 rounds to lose. Frazier unan 15.

Two first-rate punchers.
First, you have to define conditions: 1920 or 1970?
In 1920, Frazier is lighter. Dempsey fought and beat a number of black punchers in his day.
In 1970, Dempsey is bigger, boxes better and has better footwork. He also likely takes a beating from Joe for lack of jab and defense.
Each win in their era. Too far apart time-wise to compare.

Frazier. Although both are all-time greats Frazier fought in the most tuffest and competitve era in boxing.
