Go and drop in unexpectantly.
Watch closely what the staff and children are doing.
Are they interacting, or is the staff busy with other tasks or chatting amongst themselves?
A good centre will focus on the children at all times, the general athmosphere should be calm and relaxed, happy and engaging. The room should look visually appealing but not overcrowded and have a nice smell. There should be lots of natural light and space. Look at the overall cleanliness.
Look at the children: are they happy? What are they doing?
Look at the food menu, the toilet area and sleep routines. Make sure the centre policies suit you.
Look at the program, this should be readily displayed. There should be daily activities including art, as well as stories, outdoor play and music. Ensure the activities are exciting and are actually happening. Don't be afraid to ask questions: 'If my child.... what will you do?'
Ask about their behaviour management policy. How do they discipline children?
Take your child to the centre, see if the staff are interested in her and how they interact. Follow your gut instinct. I personally like centres that have lovely outdoor areas, with real grass and trees.
If you see sick children with runny noses, staff standing around chatting, children crying or left to their own devices, look elsewhere.
There are many centres out there that are lovely, but also some that shouldn't operate. Look at a few, then decide which one is best for you and your child.

look for a structured program, ask the school to see a copy of their daily schedule, they should have these ready to hand out to all the parents anyway. i know the school my duaghter goes to i know the friday before everything she is going to be doing every minute the following week, including what meals they are having. when you see the schedule look for a variety of specific activities....like if they have an art time for example they should work with different items each day. also make sure there are sensory developing toys and stuff for the imagination (toys with different textures and sounds, things like dolls, kitchen set, tools etc.) ..and structured as well as free play time. (my daughter plays games in the morning and has free play after lunch)

What the ratio of teachers to children is - the less children the better.

Fun activities to engage your child.

Ask to see their schedule and a lesson plan so you know what they do during the day.

Ask to sit in (without your daughter) before signing her up to watch the classroom. This way you can see first hand how the teachers interact with the children.
