My father has been gone 20 yrs May 22nd. He was the best dad ever and funny beyond belief. His words keep me sane and on track. Do you think it is fitting to have a small tattoo done in memory of his life and passing?

Honestly- I see no better reason in the world to get a tattoo.

All of my tattoos represent people in my life who have passed on... I've already put lots of thought into it and I know beyond a doubt that when my father passes I'll get something tattooed for him.

For some reason each tattoo makes me feel a little better about the loss, it's something private and personal that has great meaning to me. It's also a great reason to get a tattoo, unlike just random crap a lot of people get tattooed on them.

But what really matters is what you think- If you want a tattoo to remind you of your dad, go for it! No one else can say yes or no, but we can all offer our opinion.

Good luck with whatever you decide, hun.

Yes if it's something that you have given a lot of thought. If this is something spontaneous (he's been gone 20 years), then no. No one here can tell you whether or not to get a tat, or what kind of tat to get. Tattoos are personal and the decision is only your's.

With all due respect, if it's been 20 years would the tattoo change your feelings for him? Probably not. However, a small, simple tattoo to honor him does not seem out of the question. I would say yes, if it done well.

I personally would never get one, but if this tattoo is your 'monument' and tribute to your father, then sure, why not. Different people memorialize others in their own way. This way he'll always be with you.

Everyone will have an opinion on this, but really, it does not matter at all what we think, it is your dad and the memories you have of him. I would search my own conscience. Don't rush the decision. It will come to you.

Based on the seriuosness of your question and the lasting legacy of your father's memory, I think you should consider this:

"What would Dad do"?

I expect the answer would be something much more intelligent and practical than body mutilation. There must be a hundred practical ways to commemorate a great man's life and passing:

Such as:

Spend 1 day a week at a veteran's center if he was military,
Volunteer at a homeless shelter,
Dedicate a section of highway that you maintain free of litter,
Take the mutilation money and write a 20th anniversary obituary and publish it in the newspaper,

etc., etc., etc.

Point is, his greatness is a result of life and time sharing with you, and that would seem to be much more fitting to his legacy than a personal tattoo on the skin.

Good Luck

Absolutely.
I think instead of just a photo or his name, you should put an image that represents him in some way. A more "meaningful" or "significant" image just than a name. Maybe an inside joke or story, something that reminds you of him, an old adage he used to quote to you all the time. Just a thought, but I think it's commendable and sweet of you to want to honor him that way.

Of course, even a large one would be appropriate, maybe on your shoulder or somewhere on your back. Get a good artist to help you out with the design.

Absolutely. I think that is a fabulous idea. What is the one thing he ALWAYS said that helped you stay sane? I would get that and maybe a good portrait of him....but that's me. And it would be of my dad-not yours.;)
On that note, happy inking.
