We have the COT and the regular cars, yet they can't be purchasded at an auto dealer. Back when NASCAR was founded, they basically took cars from the lot and modified them, why not anymore? Since everything is about the amount of money being spent by teams, maybe if they went back to what they should be doing it might be a little less expensive for the teams.

Well lets see, #1, mustangs, vette's,and vipers are the only rear wheel drive cars built. #2 ever seen one of those old race cars,I LOVE THEM, but to be real about it DETROIT,MI. is safer than those things. as much as i would love it "WE CAN'T GO BACK TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS" and not kill 50 fans and 5 drivers at every race. but seriously go to Mooresville or Talladega and check out those old grand machines and you will have a greater respect for "THE KING" , "JAWS" and "OLE #3" I'm proud to say "I AM OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER WHEN SEX WAS SAFE AND RACING WAS DANGEROUS"

Nascar Stock Car

Its not really stock anymore. They would be very slow and unsafe if they were. They havnt been using stock cars in decades anyways so why the complaint now?

Hawk you should like the COT then. 1 car will be able to be used at all the tracks instead of using different cars for each track type. It will save money in the long run only building 1 type of car instead of several different ones. Of course large teams have an advantage since they can pool test results between more cars so pretty much they can do more testing as a team.

I think Jeff Green on a small team would have to think the COT is good. He cant break the top 30 in the old car but has run in the top 10 in all 3 COT races. They seem to have done their homework and figured it out.

No it's not stock car racing anymore and that sucks. You can barely even tell the difference between the different makes anymore. This is supposed to be in the spirit of competition. I don't get that idea. The huge multi-car teams are the only ones who ever win because they have all the money, how competitive is that? I also think it's sad that these teams have to have a different car for each track. I would be more interested in it if were back to REAL stock cars. Also put a spending limit, or revenue sharing in place so these big teams don't get any bigger. Every other sport does it.

The important thing to remember is "stock car" racing over 40 years has morphed from "strictly stock" into a full-bodied class of purpose built racecars.

The racin' is better with fenders and that is the essence of NASCAR. It doesn't matter where the fenders come from.

How many times have you seen open wheel racecars crash with the slightest bit of contact while running side by side?

The fear of "climbing a tire" hampers good racing!

Would Tony Stewart have tried that 3-wide pass for the lead at Phoenix in an Indy car? Even Tony can't be that good. There was contact and both probably would have crashed.

Why did he even try it? Fenders!

That IS "stock car" racin', just like it was in 1949.

Up til the start of the "modern era" NASCAR was stock car.But with the gas crunch, and the down sizing of Detroit iron NASCAR begain using smaller cars. This got out of controll and the manufactured cars from Detroit became a thing of the past,so the end of "stock" in stock car.Banjo Mathews built some of the best cars and was the inavator of the rolled sheetmetal cars.
Most of the cars do not favor a "showroom" marketed car.The rolled steel may have been the save during the change from "old" to "modern" but now it is hard to figure a Ford from a Chevy.
Though I have watched and gone to races since 1960 and next week shall be at Talladega,I feel NASCAR is runing not "stock"cars but manufactured imitations.
For stock cars look accross the street from Talladega at the Talladega short track.

Yes and No, What we usually consider stock cars like the ones we purchase from the dealer like you said in the olden days and the ones that we drive around currently. However I was messing around on Wikipedia and the actual term of "Stock Cars" has changed it now only refers to cars used in racing series such as Nascar, ARCA, Pro Cup, etc. As for people who complain that it stinks..... ITS RACING. Why on gods green earth would you want cars that race, that me and you drive, that can't break 130mph in a straight line. Also safety and aerodynamics and to keep the cars on a even playing field are key components why they don't make the cars the same as we drive and they have to be designed specifically to run at tracks.

Nascar came from stock cars. Today to win, the teams need composite body panles and very high speed/tech engine.

There is a show on A&E called Rumrunners, Moonshiners and something else and yes it talks to all the moonshiners like Junior Johnson who started out running shine then became very successful in NASCAR.
