Diabetes mellitus - specifically type 2 diabetes/ (Non-insulin dependent diabetes)/adult onset diabetes are all the one disease that arises from diet and other environmental factors. It accounts for ~90% of diabetes cases i.e most common.
This is one of the increasing first world disease and is linked to heart disease, obesity and other complications with body systems.
Basically if you have relavent risk factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and perhaps a genetic background that favours the incidence of the disease, you will be highly susceptible!
some tell tale signs would be:
- frequent urination
- hyperglycaemia or high blood glucose ( fasting plasma glucose of 7.0> mmol/l or a plasma glucose of 11.1> mmol/l 1-2 hours after a meal.
- tiredness
- constant hunger
- vomiting/nausea (early signs)
The best thing to avoid diabetes is to stay healthy.
Excercise, eat and rest in moderation. It doesn't harm to purchase a blood glucose meter either there are small compact ones available now~

There isn't a way to tell who is going to get it and who isn't. Some people with a family history of it are more likely than those that don't to end up with it. In the case of Juvenile Diabetes (the type I have) doctors aren't really sure what causes it but it may be a virus that affects the pancreas.
Warning signs:
frequent urination
excessive thirst
extreme fatigue
loss of apatite
weight loss
dizzy
headaches
*these are some of the most common signs
Prevention:
watch your weight and what you eat
if you have a family history of it get tested

Chances are you do not know, but if you are drinking a lot of fluid, water and going to the toilet more often then that could be the start. The cause, diet, lack of exercise, eating or drinking too much sugary stuff. The only real way to tell if you have it, see a Doctor who can do a test. Yes it can be prevented, good lifestyle, exercise, watch what you eat.

Most common symptoms are frequent urination and thirst. Another symptom I had was after I would eat I would get very tired, even after a low carb meal. The best way to find out is to have your fasting blood sugar checked, which basically means to have your blood sugar level checked after not eating for at least 12 hours.
