in their culture, it is thought that aids can be cured by having sex with a virgin. messed up, right? that's why aids is spreading so much faster there than other places.

Myths and Legends abound around HIV/AIDS in educated populations. In outlying areas where the educational level is low, these myths and legends take on a life of their own. In Africa, in particular, it is thought that if a man has sex with a virgin that he will be cured of HIV. Since culturally, the man is considered powerful and valued, it's easy for a myth like this to become a part of that culture. So, it is not viewed as rape. This is seen much, much less in urban areas of Africa where education is more accessible.
In the U.S., amazingly, the same sort of phenomenon is found in more rural areas where the cost and demands of educating children is prohibitive. Perhaps not this same myth but others, as ridiculous as this.

Men who rape, either children or adults do so because they are SICK [mentally, not just physically]. Rape is a crime of violence, not of sex; these men want to prove to themselves that they have power over their victims and can force and humiliate them. I've known and seen cases of depraved men who have raped newborn babies [both male and female]; sadly, the physical trauma is so great in such young innocent victims that most of them die. Literally, their internal organs are torn to shreds by such a brutal act. And it happens to thousands of children each and every day, here in the USA. In most cases the rapist is a close family member [father, grandpa, uncle, brother, cousin...]. As for Africa, some cultures have the belief that copulating with a virgin can cure AIDS.

Each culture has myths that are believed by the local group. In some cultures, it is a myth that raping a child can free one of HIV?AIDS. (The virus would leave the infected person and go onto the next person -- scientifically untrue.)
The issue in any myth is lack of information.

I heard that there was a rumor going around Africa that if you had sex with a virgin, it would cure you. So the result was mass rapes on little girls, some of them were even infants.

opra did a show on this and i guess it is rumored that if they have sex with a virgin it will cure them of aids. that is not a true thing though it just spreads the disease to innocent babies who don't deserve it
