You will not die from holding your breathe. You will black out briefly and then start breathing again. It takes as little as 5 minutes for the brain cells to start dying after it has no more oxygen to use. This is not the oxygen in your lungs but the oxygen in your blood. The difference between holding your breathe and being strangled.... when you hold your breathe you are starting out with oxygen but then are holding in carbon dioxide. Lack of oxygen and extra carbon dioxide is what will cause you to pass out ,this will happen before the oxygen in your blood is depleted, and since your brain is still functioning you will start breathing again. When you are being strangled you typically don't get the chance to take a deep breathe first, you start with little or no oxygen in your lungs and so are relying and what is left in the blood only. Natural response is to struggle and this is going to deplete the oxygen in the blood faster. When there is no more oxygen in the blood your brain will start to die, as your brain is dying it is still possible for your body to be moving (chicken with his head cut off) There for by the time your body stops moving you already have too much brain damage to control your vital organs.

To start with, say when a little child says they are going to hold their breath in a tantrum. IF they can hold it until they actually pass out, as soon as they do, their body will automatically begin to breathe again.
On the other hand, if you are trying to kill someone (strangle), you're right, you would have to wait until the brain had run out of oxygen and was no longer functioning, thereby leaving the brain unable to resume normal breathing. How long this takes, I do not know off the top of my head.
Did this help?
