Steven Segal is a 7th degree black belt in aikido. He was raised and trained in Japan for years and opened his own dojo there. He eventualy went back to the U.S. where he opened a dojo and continued teaching. He always wanted to be famous so he started applying for movies and eventually got roles.
So he is using his Aikido in his movies, however there is a little bit of Hollywood mixed in when it comes to the dramatic arm breaks. Other than that it is basically Aikido. It is true that aikido does not have competitions so there is apparently no venue for testing ones abilities in a realistic mannor. However Aikido is a child of Aki JuJitsu created in the 1920s. We know JuJitsu has been proven and Aikido is taught by many police forces and military, so it must be practical.
I have 13 years of Judo which is Aikidos older brother, also derived from JuJitsu only earlier in the 1880s. And I have trained in Aikido as a self defence/restraint form through my work. I find it very practical especially when combined with Judo...

It is a style of Aikido. Most people think that to do real Aikido you must be nice and the tech. will not work, in real life. I am her as a statement that Aikido can be effective and not always "nice". I am into real combat, train only what I believe is real effective in real life. I a student of Aikido, for many years now, and I will tell you that yes Aikido has many tech. and ideas that would get you hurt on the street against a real fighter, but if you tweek them, add here and there they are deadly. In the hands of someone that has skill Aikido can work in the streets. I've studied hard forms and soft forms of Aikido, even the soft forms will work. The only problems, I see, is that getting in the position to execute without getting the crap knocked out of you. That's why my Jiu-Jitsu, Kali and MMA is handy. Again, it's not the style that works it's the person using it. I feel 100% sure that using my Aiki I could without a doubt be effective. And I would not say that without exper. behind me.

He claims it's Aikido, but in truth it isn't, it's a diluted or corrupted form of something that resembles Aikido. For one thing, breaking opponents limbs and kicking their teeth in isn't part of Aikido training nor is knocking em down by punching em in the gut like he does in the movies. Aikido is a fully defensive art, it has no attack, no kick, no punch and certainly no karate chops. All it has is an arsenal of throws and pins that's designed to neutralize and disarm an unprovoked attack without using excessive force. Not exactly the kind of thing that sells movies, so Seagal had to mix in a lot of moves from karate, kali and god knows what other style he could think of just to make him look good beating up the baddies on film. It was pretty effective in his first few films, until his gut balooned and he resorted to wearing dark oversized coats to disguise his blubber. Way I see it, his fashion sense causes more pain to the bad guys than his "fighting"skills in his movies.

Steven Seagal is a master of Aikido. It is a very old style of MA's that teaches you how to use your opponents energy and and everything against them, with very lil movement on your part. Unlike what some like to think, Aikido works.

Aikido is his art of expertise and was the basis for many of the techniques he used in his first few movies. Currently his movies have gotten so "Hollywood" and his name so commercialized that it's become ridiculous. Truthfully no one knows what the hell he's using now I think it's a new art developed at Burbank studios called "Ai Kan Make Mo Dough". I very highly doubt his former Instructors would be smiling if he claimed that Aikido was the single most dominant art that he uses in his current dance ensembles...I mean fight choreography.

He uses mainly Aikido/Aiki-Jitsu techniques. He also uses some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques like in "Under Seige 2" I guess because BJJ Master John Machado was in that movie?

If an Aikido Master were to get in a challenge match or a street fight with a EXPERIENCED fighter I can almost be certain the outcome will be similar to this:

Aikido...Steven actually went to Japan and learned that stuff, and he got so good he got to teach that stuff...see youtube and look for aikido steven seagull clips. In order to be a "westerner" to learn and teach Aikido, youve gotta be pretty good, and be a total bad mofo.

also, hes "apparently" a reincarnation of some budhist llama.

which is all very cool.

Movie Aikido/ though it all looks the same in reality though, because ALL Aikido training is choreographed like the movies, so it looks awesome, but never happens.

adrenaline kicks in and the Aikidoka becomes the master of teh hay maker.
