I know a kitchen fitter. He says gloss worktops are easily scratched and show these fine scratches whereas the matt finish one don't.

As an interior designer, I would agree with most of the previous answers: high gloss will show damage more. Matt is a safer and more practical option, and looks very attractive. I suspect that if you're interested in the gloss worktops you may already have gloss finish on the cupboards. If this is the case, a matt worktop would be a better idea on a design and practical level. A matt surface would frame and emphasize the gloss cupboards, whereas a glossy counter would be too much of a good thing.

Hi, I love the glossy black worktops but decided against them when I did my kitchen last year as I was concerned about marks left after wiping them down.
In the end I went for a slate grey matt finish. They are no good either. Every time you wipe them down they leave water marks nehind and you have to dry them with a towel. They do look nice though and wish I had gone for the black gloss.
If you don't want any marks go for a light colour either matt or gloss. If you don't mind drying them off everytime you wipe them down go for the gloss black as they look more classy.
Hope this helps

I work for a kitchen manufacturer, and yes the gloss ones scratch quite easy. Any worktop will scratch if misused but the gloss ones highlight the fault. Matt finish are far more durable and the only thing I've found to mark them is tin foil after you've covered and baked the spuds. The heat and aluminium causes a small white circle which is impossible to shift.

stay away from the glossy finish as it will show up every single mark - unless it's real granite which is bullet proof but really expensive! I went for dull matt black speckled worktops from Ikea - dirt cheap and after 2 and a half years, no scratches or marks. There are some companies that cover normal worksurfaces with a granite covering - that is also an option.

very heavy use will take off shin after a long time, but normal use you will be fine with gloss. But buy the best quality worktop so the laminate will be better quality. I say go for high gloss it look really good also. Make sure the edges get well sealed around taps and sink this can be a big mistake.
Good luck with kitchen.

Just had a new kitchen put in & were warned off the gloss finish worktops because they show up every inperfection over time and at some time you're going to get scratches on it.

We sell all types of countertop materials. Use a matte or satin solid surface, preferably an unfilled polyester. Scratches won't show unless you look for them using glare from a light.
Most minor scratches will disapear eventually with regular cleaning, major scratches can be sanded out by the homeowner invisiblly in a few minutes.

I suppose if you scratch a glossy surface the scratch itself would appear to have a matt finish, so I'd personally stay away from the glossy finish.

I would avoid the glossy, as it will show imperfections.
I think black is just a trendy color at the moment and you may want to have something more neutral to stay in style longer. But I don't know your other colors and if it's what you want then go for it. Just offering some other ideas. good luck
