I mean we know a lick means they like us, but when I kiss my dog on the head, does it know that is a sign of affection?

I blame this question on lack of sleep and an over abundence of coffee!!!!

I think so. I am away at college for my first year and when I have come back home, My dog literally jumps up into my arms and kisses me. I think they know kisses are an affectionate action. I kiss my dog on the head on the time and he seems to know what it means....I don't really know though....

Absolutely! Our kiss to them is the same as their lick to us. I even make kissing sounds and my dog comes running. They can feel the love behind it.I have baby bunnies and from ten days old I handle and kiss them. Many have returned the kisses with licks even at that age.Dogs have similar feelings to humans.mad,sad,glad,scared,sexy. I had one who lost his mate and went through a terrible depression.Think when you get mad , they have that guilty look. They get frisky and flirty. They feel fear with something new. It's a good question

I feel that if done with a lot of love behind it, any form of physical touch will convey the feelings of love to the dog.

I know my dogs know what a kiss is, though when I try to kiss other dogs sometimes if they aren't used to it they'll shy away. It's not a universal thing but I think that you and your dog end up forming an unspoken bond and understanding with each other.

Perhaps it just makes me feel better to think they understand :')

I reckon they do - they probably interpret it the same as a lick, as it's something we do with our mouths. They probably just think we're kind of dumb and can't lick properly! Anyway, cats and dogs always seem to take kisses in the spirit they're given!

I blame my answer on my addiction to Yahoo Answers and being slightly bored at work!

I belive they would recognise it. I found a baby kitten in the trash can by my house the poor thing couldnt even open her eyes, I got the kitten and i raised her with plenty of love her name is Swedoms Pumpkin Pie and she knows I lopve her I ask her for kisses all the time and with no hesitastion she jumps on my chest puts her little paw on my check and gives my a little kitty kiss. So ur dog knows u love him.

Wolves and other wild dogs lick and gently bite each others muzzles as a greeting when they're happy to see each other. It's also about dominance but it's partly affection too.

Yes... my dog loves me kissing her head. She snuggles up to me and gives me a kiss back. This is different to when they lick you to get salt (think thats right) off your skin.

I don't think dogs are able to percept humans as being loving by physical things such as touches and hugs. I think their perception is in moods...that whole they can smell if your someone who is good or who is bad...that whole sixth sense thing they got to keep that we lost when we became "civilized." To us, a kiss symbolizes love, but to them, their owner is just being playful. But we know we love them and that they love us back in their own way, so that's enough.

Well, I sure as hell hope so. Unless you'd rather lick your dog to show it affection. No thank you.

hehe cute and random question!! i like to think and hope they see it that way!! but i really do think they see it as affection!!! bc that is really what u r showing them!! like u can say is hitting a dog showing signs of anger and wrongness! YES and we can see that in training, right?! usually or not usually but maybe commanlly ppl use some form of aggressiveness in training. like when they pee in the wrong place u tell them no, your voice gets louder and u show that it is wrong...and thats how they know not to pee in wrong places...bc its bad bc u showed it was!! now same goes w signs of affection!! again we see it in training they did something good, like pee in the RIGHT place we reward them w treats and happiness like good puppy/doggy, and we pet them and give them lil belly rubs which shows them that hey if i do that thing (pee in right place for example) they give me treats (yippy food) and love-affection!! so y not do it more!! so back to ur question...i really do think that dogs know signs of affection from signs of anger!! like they know the differene bt them, maybe they dont know what it really is or means but i think they know its good and not bad type of thing!!!

by they way i love dogs and like to ramble on about them!!
