I have a Biostar BIOS (I think that's how it is). I want to install Knoppix to my external HDD. After I switch the boot sequence to start from cd, it restarts, starts to boot up, detects all my USB hardware, and freezes. It says "Missing or corrupt file A:\DRDOS\SCDD.SYS". I assume it's because I don't have a bootable floopy, nor a floppy drive, for that matter. But what can I do?

How did you burn the CD? This sounds like something that could be caused by an improperly burned CD. You downloaded an image of the CD, so you don't have to do anything but burn the image. There's an option somewhere in most CD burning programs to burn from an image. That's what you need to pick. Also, Knoppix is not ideal for installing to a hard drive. I suggest Ubuntu for that. Good night!

PS: Checking the image for corruption is a good idea, but it won't buy you anything in this case. Just make sure you're burning it right for now. The process of burning an image is very straightforward . . . all you have to do is basically find the option and then tell the burning software what image you want to burn. The option is much easier to find in Linux than it is in the Windows CD burners I've seen, but it's not difficult in either case. I don't know about Knoppix, but other distros have the capability to check their own CDs after you have it burned correctly so it can boot. Good luck!

1. Change the boot order to first removable media(cd)
and then the IDE disks and save the configurations.
2. Make sure the CD is correct if you have downloaded from the internet run a md5 checksum on the iso to see if it has not been corrupted in download. If you have received the cd fron other sources then go to the distributions site and verify the checksum of your cd from that given on the site for your version.
3. Once you are sure that the cd is valid, then check if the installation cd supports the drivers for your cd drive. If not download additional drivers for the distribution
4. If the problem persists then try to see if a live cd distribution runs on your machine. If it does then the problem is your hardware.
5. Well now you may PANIC. or try a simple minimalistic distribution like ttylinux to see the hardware configuration.
