A fool is a character designed to mock the ruler's opinions and edicts in order to show him another perspective. In this way, the king does not have to contend with a rival faction and have his ego bruised or his rule challenged, but he avoid the stagnation of lording over a bunch of slack-jawed yes-men.
The fool is often the mouthpiece of the playwright, who can have him say things that the other characters dare not say. This often makes him one of the more interesting characters, though only in his interactions with the rest of the cast. The Fool himself is fairly shallow and uninteresting when taken on his own.

what is a fool? I like to think that a fool is someone has, had their fill of wool. In theory saying that there are some species of beings who, partake in the consumption of dead skin cells produced from hair follicle from the animals named sheep!
