Watch out for salad that has lots of dressing or oil!

If you check out the calories in salads offered by major fast-food chains, you'll see there are more fat calories in some of the salads than in the burgers!!!

But it's not necessary to spike up a boring pile of lettuce to get the benefits... There are new, trendy ways to use this vegetable based on tasty international cuisine.

You know how lettuce is used as a garnish in some super-high calorie foods like sandwiches? Well, you can turn this idea "inside out"...

The best thing I've seen anyone do with lettuce (in this case, Romaine is the best) is use it as a wrap, like a tortilla. This way you save calories over bread wraps, and combine it in the right ratio with other healthy foods.

Lay out the lettuce, and pile it up with lots of goodies like lean chicken strips, steak-um strips, drained tuna, strips of veggies, a little spicy sauce, and some fluff like rice or sprouts. Be careful not to overfill. Excess sauce will drip out, so have a plate or napkin handy . Roll it up like a burrito and prepare for some good crunchy eating!

While there are great vitamins and minerals in greens, you can also overdo it. However, you can eat an average sized head of lettuce per day without overdosing on any of these things, and you will probably experience better skin and bone health than on the usual "diet." Leafy greens can reduce the risk of many diseases later in life. As a fringe benefit, you'll be more satisfied with less high-density calories!

Bon appetit!

NOTE: bottom link is calorie info you asked for earlier.

thisgirl,

The short answer:

This amount of lettuce, good.
This amount of eating, maybe bad.

It sounds like the problem is not in the lettuce.

While the lettuce is good for you, and while it's really, really hard to eat "too much" lettuce--it is virtually impossible to overdose on raw food, and this time, depending on the kind of lettuce you ate you certainly didn't get too much--that you are eating 4 bowls in one sitting most likely means that you are not eating something that you should when you should earlier in the day.

What else did you eat today and when?
And how big are these bowls of salad?

If they are little bowls, you have little to worry about. If they are big ones, then you need to look at your eating habits.

Iceburg lettuce doesn't have many nutrients in it. Romaine does, and if you're going to eat lettuce (by all means, do), I would recommend Romaine lettuce with spinach. At least that way you're getting lots of nutrients. Add some cabbage, a tomato, a celery stalk, some broccoli, kidney beans, and toss it with apple cider vinegar, and you have a great salad meal.

And eat slowly.

You sound like you binged tonight. It's a good binge, being salad, but it's troubling that you binged at all. These things can quickly grow into habits which are hard to break. Eat sensibly throughout the day to avoid bingeing at night, which is the time of day most people have trouble controlling their appetites.

No you cannot overdose on lettuce
it is like eating water
although the plant has a lot of opium content in the sap
when it is growing and you break of a leaf ,a white milk comes out ,collect this and let it dry
after demolishing about 10 plants you got a nice ball of raw opium
that is mild compared to opium from the poppies
but it is opium nevertheless .

very few people know this

It's not the salad that will do you any damage it's the stuff you put on it! Back off on the oil and the salt, and stick with a little lemon juice or low fat dressing. Then, eat to your (lettuce) hearts content. :)

When your bowels turn into a salad shooter, then you know you've ate to much...maybe some no fat yogurt or Special K cereal instead of rabbit food?
