The energy drinks on the market tend to be mostly caffeine and sugar. They might give you a quick lift, but you can also expect a quick drop.
I personally drink a nutritional supplement that provides me with energy, mental clarity and focus, as well as stress management. I like it because it gives me a steady supply of energy all day long, so there is no "dip" in the afternoon. It is not sold in stores and the only advertisement is word of mouth.
I am not able to provide the link on Y!A because it is against the guidelines, but if you would like more information, you can e-mail me through Y!A and I will provide you with the link to the company.

When I was in the army, I used to go on long route marches.
6-8 hours before, I drank 1 litre of chocolate milk.
Just before, I drank about 1.5 litres of isotonic drink (100plus).
During the march, I had 4 red bulls at intervals and 2 litres of isotonic drinks. I would have had more but I would have had to carry it.
I walked 40km in 6hrs and 23mins carrying full load (about 30kg).
